I'm looking at a used RIA 1911, which is considerably inexpensive.

The standard sights of course are not up to par. I want new sights. What cut are the rear sighs? Standard? Would that mean a gunsmith would only charge me for cutting the front sight slot and installing the new sights?

I find it awkward that 1911's have so many different cuts for sights. Standard, Novak, Heinie, Bomar...

This is quite overwhelming for a 1911 noob.

Shoot Novak Sight's an e-mail & they'll be happy to answer any & all questions you have on your options. For a nominal fee, they'll also install new sights AND sight the gun in for you. I cannot tell you how much grief this saved me with a shooting-too-low USP 9mm I bought used. When I got it back, it was ready to go!

Good luck!
