I know nothing about them. I know Colt made (makes?) one, the Delta Elite, and I know Kimber made an Eclipse in 10mm for a while. Whats involved in making a 10mm 1911, can it be done with a barrel/recoil spring change, or is there more to it than that? Thanks!
The 10mm/40 slides are different than the 45 slide. The breechface is smaller on the 10mm, the extractors, I think, are different and the ejector might be different.
Right now Dan Wesson is making 2 different models of 10mm, Kimber still makes one, STI will build one if ordered, as do most of the custom smiths. Or, if you can find one in 40, you can always have it reamed out to fit 10mm and change a few springs. I did this with a 40 STI, it worked great. |
10mm is known for beating the shit out of 1911s. Of the few I have seen personally, about 75% had wear related problems and/or damage.
From what I have heard, if it's built correctly (not just factory "assembled"), it's not a problem. At least so say the likes of YoBo etc.
I agree 100%. A competent smith (doesn't even have to be a great smith) should be able to get one running well without concern for wear. |
Jason Burton at Yost-Bonitz explained to me that the issue with the Delta Elites is usally poor timing. That leads to battering and cracking and such. If everything is fit correctly, he says it is not an issue. |
YES! Double Tap has some 10mm loads w/ almost 800 ft.-lbs. of muzzle energy compared to a max of about 500 ft.-lbs. for .45acp, it is most certainly more powerful and has a flatter trajectory. |
10mm generates as much energy at 100 yards as .45ACP does at the muzzle. |
Some 10's are loaded to higher levels than others. Some 10's have .40 S&W level ballistics.
This does give one some flexibility. |
Interesting, I might have to pick one up.... |
Big +1. Another serious issue causing beat up Deltas is that many Delta owners don't change out their recoil springs enough or at all. |

Anyone have any information about this? |

You'll probably have to call and ask. I'm almost positive Wilson will not build a custom 10mm any more. They may customize one for you, but I doubt they'll build one from the ground up. Nighthawk as I understand it, will do whatever you want. |
Wilson still does custom work to order, on their frames and on other frames. I can't imagine why they would refuse a 10mm.
I hope you're right, but they dumped the 10mm mags a loooonnngg time ago and shown no interest what so ever in doing anything 10mm related. No surprise I'm sure, the Wilson 10mm mags were the best available. I'd buy some today if I could find them. |
drew5337: There is also a slight difference in the frame. I don't know if this is on all later 1911-10mm guns, but initially Colt had a bunch of cracked frame in the slide stop hole. The newer Colt 10mm 1911s have the little piece of metal above the slide stop hole machined away and this remedied the problem of the frame cracking.
To my knowledge (which is admittedly very limited), the frame cracking issue occurred in only a handful of pre-production Colt 10s and was not a problem in any of the subsequent production runs of Delta Elites. A few months ago (after catching the 10mm bug), I was looking into Deltas and read a few threads regarding the frame cracking issues. I was assured (by a few knowledgeable Delta "specialists") that it wasn't as widespread as the rumors make it out to be. Now that I have purchased one (now being customized by Yost-Bonitz headbang.gif), I am hoping that they were telling the truth! |

Not true. I just got this email from Larry Lyles at Wilson. I asked about getting a CQB with NO forward cockers in 10mm. Here's his reply (which I got 5 minutes ago) "Rich, We can do the CQB in 10mm, I could order without front cocking serrations, but it would be a very long wait, we have to get enough orders in to machine out several slides at one time. Just let me know if I can assist. Thanks Larry" |

Wrong I am. That's good news! Thanks for posting the response from Wilson. |

Im not going to post whore my 10mms, as Im sure everyone has seen or is sick of seeing them
so Im tagging because I dig the 10mm FWIW Dan Wesson/CZ makes a might fine 10mm GB has them in the 800-1000 range... If I had a semi custom built I would have NH build it. |
I was in the market for a 10mm 1911 about a year and half ago. Looked at dan wesson, but couldn't get one. Looked at kimber and then nighthawk. By the time i bought a kimber and had it upgraded to my preferences I would be spending a few buck, so I decided to take a closer look at NH. I as almost sold until I was a picture of Ted Yosts personal 10mm. I was sold and decided to have the boys yb just build me a custom just the way I wanted it. caspian frame with a delta slide. i'll let you know when i get it.
.....man, getting all sorts of crazy info today. I just found out that NH will NOT do a 10mm. I guess they used to, but won't anymore.

I read on 1911forums that SA would custom build a Professional Model in 10mm. I e-mailed them to verify this and here is her response
Thank you for your interest in Springfield Custom handguns! You can have a full custom pistol built through the custom shop in 10mm with the features of the Professional. It would not be marked “Professional” on the slide or have the “CRG” prefix to the serial number, but could have all of the other specifications. Cost for a custom pistol with the features of the Professional light rail in 10mm, with Heinie sights would be $2595. Estimated delivery on this type of custom pistol order would be approx. 8 months from the date the order, deposit, and dealer’s FFL are received in our office. woohoo. i have placed the order and sent them the deposit(1/3). this is a viable option for those of you considering or waiting for the wilson in 10mm and it is cheaper than the custom route. i have a couple of the professionals in .45 and I love them. this is so cool. she is going to send me the build/spec sheet. i'll post that when i get it. have fun |

biga_mn: Wow, $2,600 is some serious bucks for a gun, and 8 months delivery time?
In the mean time, if you don't already, I would learn to reload. 10mm ammo is not the most widely available, ie not around the corner gunstore. Get some cases from www.starlinebrass.com/, they used to based in Santa Fe Spring Calif(15 miles SE of Los Angeles) before moving to MO. Good prices. Or if you don't want cases from Starline, get Win, Rem etc. And of course 40cal bullets. |
From everywhere I've read on the net from very qualified smiths...when you get a $2500 gun from Springfield, you pretty much get $2500 worth of gun, and that says a lot to me. Their custom shop is a real custom shop, with real smiths...it's not just labeled "custom shop" with a group of angry beavers doing the work; it's a real honest-to-goodness gunsmith shop.
biga_mn, you will let me fondle the toy when it comes around, right? Now I'm tempted to order one from 'em... Hrm...tempting tempting tempting... |
$2600 with an 8 month wait is pretty good for a custom. I am on a 5 year waiting list with one smith. $2600 is very reasonable, especially when compared to a few of my other custom projects. They started at $2000 on a pistol/frame/slide I provided. I am very happy with the product the custom shop puts out. As I've said--the Professional is my favorite "production" 1911. If you want to spend less money, I'll bet they'll build you a MC Operator in 10mm.
ed--of course. bring lots of ammo. |
I've had a Thompson(auto-ordinance) 10 mil like from when it first came out!!
It came with combat hammer, wrap around rubber(thompson inlay )and I loved to shoot full power 200 grain bullets from it! You could buy them or 10.00 a box!!! I bought an Oly Nat match .40 &W barrel ,and recoil spring for it! I also bought a Colt barrell, new ejector, and slide just encase I wanted to go to 45 acp!! Just how versitile is this platform? Bob |
biga_mn: Forgot to mention, when you get your new toy at the end of 8 months or so, I hope that delivery date won't slip, but who knows; be sure to post some pictures. I would love to see the end-result
Also regarding the prices, I haven't bought a gun in a number of years, and they have all gone up substantially, so my idea of gun prices is way out of date. OT/BTW: This guy who I just met once(a friend of a friend), ordered one of those rifles similar to the one Tom Selleck used in the 1990 movie Quigley Down Under, but according to my friend his was a 45-90, this one was to be in 45-120; with an octagonal barrel and extra fancy burl walnut stock. Initially, the shop quoted 1/3 down of $2,100 and delivery in 12 months. At the end of 3 years from date of order, it was finally delivered. I'm reasonably sure today, he could easily sell it for $5,000. |

I found a kimber exlise custom II in 10mm sitting in a gun store, I bought it over a target kimber in 10mm they had right beside it.
I won't get a chance to go shoot until tuesday it looks like, darn I miss living in the country. Anyway, as far as magazines go there is a company called metalform and there was a group buy on another site that I read about. If you order enough magazines the prices get pretty reasonable and I think that is the company I am going to deal with. I am still reading up on what works best for these guns but metalform seems very well respected so that is why I decided to mention them. As far as converting a 40s&w 1911 to 10mm I recall reading that some of the 40s&w guns are easily changed over as already mentioned. However, I also recall reading that some are build on a smallish frame and because of this they can not be converted to 10mm due to the 10mm round being too long. As I recall this is easily checked by trying to insert a normal 10mm magazine into the gun. I am pretty new to the 1911s, I owned a cheapy a while back and liked the design but did not like the cheapy gun I bought. I knew I wanted a 10mm factory 1911 and now I have one. |
If you already have a 40S&W 1911, you are 2/3ds of the way there to convert to 10mm or vica versa, the reason being is that the 9mm Para & 10mm Auto/40S&W has the small breach face. Some of the S&W autos are too small in the mag well area to accomodete the longer 10mm round, so S&W & Winchester brought out the 40S&W. Nothing wrong with the inexpensive guns, they just don't look as nice, but I bet they would shoot practically the same. |
Or just go to www.doubletapammo.com for the full power stuff that the 10mm was MADE to digest! |
I called Wilson about 2 weeks ago. They told me to call back in 30 days and they'd have the 10mm mags available. |
Yeah, I've heard that stuff is pretty good, but I have never shot that ammo personally. I reload 10mm rounds and the low is $3.50/50 rounds with lead bullets, and very roughly doubled that for jacketed rounds. Because the main cost of a loaded round is in the bullet, you can load target loads to some real chest thumping hunting loads for practically the same cost, the cost of powder is neglible. |
Thanks for the info. I hadn't gotten around to calling them yet. |

I think Stokes owns that now.... |
