I have a Colt Commander in 9mm, serial # 14XX-LW. Anyone know roughly what year this was made?

I got the pistol from my dad and have only shot it a few times. Some of the finish is worn off but it appears to be in decent shape. I was considering having some work done to it and rotating it into my CCW line up. Mods would probably be new sights, re-finish, grips, trigger work, etc. Any thoughts?

Did your Dad get it from his Dad?

It appears to be somewhere around 1951 if www.proofhouse.com is correct.

The proofhouse should have the info you seek.

Yes. Leave it alone, and forget carrying it. If that doesn't make you happy, then I'll trade you for a Commander that you can monkey with to your heart's content for CCW.

Quite possibly. Hmmm... I figured it was older, but didn't think it was that old.

Is the general consensus to leave it alone just due to its age? Is it worth anything or is it just the mystique of having one that old?
