I am putting together a lesson plan which requires the maximum effective range and the maximum travel distance of the federal 180gr hyrda-shok.
I can't seem to find anything, anywhere on these two subjects. not even conjecture.... any help would be appreciated.

Depends on the shooter, and your definition of "effective". I can easily make hits on a man sized target at 100 yards with a .45, and know several folks who could do so at 200. I would think the flatter shooting .40 could do the same.

I am not looking for trajectory stuff here. I know I can put a hole in paper at 100yrds. We have an indoor range, so conditions are perfect. I need to know if it will still put a man down at that range.
Also the actual distance the round will travel. like on a box of 22lr it says this bullet can travel up to one mile. I can't see a 40. going that distance. |

conjecture here but i carry one on duty....A 40 will travel a mile with the proper angle on it...It will reset the badguy's OODA loop if it hits him at a distance from 0-500 meters.

IDK, I hit a steal target with a very loud ding at 100 with my little Glock 27. Only hit it a few times though. 165g fmj

Let's plug this into the handloads.com ballistic calculator, shall we?
According to their tool, a 180gr., .400", "SWC/HP" style bullet, launched at 1000fps, will still have 439 fps of ass behind it at 1000 yards. Of course, you'll have to "hold over" 286 FEET to get it there, assuming a 25y zero. It would likely still be able to cause death at that range. It doesn't drop below 700 fps until 365 yards. The .38/200 and .38 Special killed an aweful lot of people with similar ballistics. I've repeatedly nailed a man-sized gong at 400 yards with my .22LR...using 20-25 FEET of hold over. Point it, range is more dependent on the launching platform, the amount of time allocated to the shot, and the skill of the operator than the projectile or its velocity. |

The .40 will have almost same amount of energy at 400 yards as a .380 or 38 special at muzzle approx 200 ft/lbs. That'll be about 175 ft/lbs at 500 yards.
A hollow point may not expand at that level of energy, but it'll still penetrate enough to kill. |

I'm guessing it was constructed out of 16 gauge sheet metal. Heavier than your typical car body, but probably less than 1/8". Sitting out at 200 yards I could hit it with my Dad's GI Colt 45 every time once I got the hold over figured out. At that range it wouldn't penetrate one side, much less both, using milsurp 45 hardball ammo. Made a nice big dent though. There was a big set of gym lockers out there too, wouldn't penetrate those either at 200 yards. |

It takes 4 seconds for a .45 round to go 500 yards. I would line up the shot, squeeeeeeeeezzzeee the trigger, shot would break, I would calmly put the pistol down and pick up my binos, focus on the target, wait.... wait.... *thump* |
