Its my buddie's Wive's car.

Black 04 XR with 210,000 miles all highway. She is a EMT 2 counties over.

Just paid off.  No known problems.

Only blems are driver's side window control face plate is cracked. rear bumper clear coat is pealing. Only on the bumper, weird.

$1500

Well GD fo.

Got an '03 XR for my wife back in 05. Has about 100k now. Never had a problem, ever. Efficient, drives pretty good for what it is, as long as you keep in mind that it's an economy car. It's a corolla wagon, the corolla has an excellent track record.

The styling took a while to grow on me, but it's service has been outstanding.

That is a lot of miles, the timing belt needs changed every 100k so make sure that has been done.

I have rented the Matrix while on business.  I really wanted to like it.  But it was too underpowered for my tastes.

Keep in mind that no rental car company will give you the XR model with a manual transmission so take my recommendation with a grain of salt.

210k miles?  I don't care what vehicle it is.  You are going to have problems down the road.

If it was under 100k, I'd say yes assuming for the right price.

Yeah I definitely would, but that's a hell of a lot of mileage, I sure wouldn't pay very much for it.

I wouldn't pay very much for any car with 200,000 because that's an average of 20 years worth of wear.

While you might get another 50,000 out of it, you're really at the end of the line and at the point where expensive things break.

I'm just saying that with 210k miles, things are bound to go wrong.

I will echo this. Wife wanted an auto, so that's what we got. A little more oomph, and small tweak to the suspension would make it a hoot to drive.

Also, you can put a lot of shit in it. Seats fold down, even the front passenger seat. It's a pretty handy car, even with it's shortcomings performancewise.

Yes, I would.

I drove my cousin's around for a week, and found it to be a very zippy, comfortable, and practical car. Not bad at all.

I agree with that.

Cars are hitting 200K regularly these days, but asking for much beyond that is still a bit much to ask IMO.

Way too much.  I'm assuming that if something goes wrong (major), you have no intentions of repairing it?

How long do you plan on it lasting?  Is $1500 for a year of use good?  Is $1500 for a month of use good?

Sounds like the price right but be aware that you are getting to the end of the cheap service life.  Honda and Toyota are the only two brands I would do this with and only selected models within those brands.

My sister for a couple years had a 2003 Pontiac Vibe(GM's version of the Matrix.)  It was the FWD version with the automatic, Monotone Appearance Package and Moon and Tunes package.

It was a really great car.  Engine was buzzy but other than that not a bad car.  It got an easy 34 mpg.

Edmunds.com says about 3500 for a private sale with that many miles.  Not sure I would pay that much for anything with that many miles, but for 1500 it would be worth considering.  Go into it knowing its going to cost you some repairs (even 'yoters break).   I probably wouldn't take it on the family vacation to Yellowstone.  City miles are going to use up what's left of it pretty quick.

That price is not out of line. I would offer $1400 and drive it like I stole it.

Toyota Kool aid.

We bought a 2005 Matrix New. It has about 60K miles on it. It has been dead nuts reliable, but is a fucking rattle bucket. So much so that we're having the dealer tear the front dash out on the next service to find the damned rattles and squeeks. Google "Matrix rattles"

Drive it over some bumpy roads to see if you have similar issues.

What amazes me is how people think a car they probably paid barely $18K for in 2004, and has over 200K miles on it, should still sell for $10K or some absurd straight line depreciation out to 500K miles.

For my own personal experience, I might possibly be persuaded to buy a new Toyota, but would certainly never buy a used one as they just don't seem to be worth it at used prices.

ETA: The asking price of $1500 is probably reasonable. If you get 6-months of motoring out of it and then junk it for parts, it probably doesn't owe you much. But driving something that you can be fairly certain will let you down, is not something I'd be keen on.

Have you all looked at used cars lately?  200K miles is the norm for cars $2K and up.

1999 Toyota Camry Solara $3,650  Mileage: 205,125

2001 Toyota Corolla - $3,495   Mileage: 192,000

1996 Toyota Camry - $3,995 Mileage: 184,000

I have one for a company vehicle, an 09. Dont know that I would buy any car with that much mileage though, unless it was dirt cheap. I have just under 50K on mine, so far so good.

Cash for clunkers. Junked lots of low cost, but gas-heavy vehicles that would have been purchased by people who now instead have to compete for non truck/SUV alternatives.

Try to trade it in at a dealer?  I realize they don't give you the highest value, but why would you pay a premium for it?  It's got a ton of miles and have no idea what is wrong with the car.  The car is going to be driven 30k miles a year.  What is your $1500 worth to you?  If you got a month out of it, was it $1500 well spent?  Just because the price "seems" good, doesn't make it "worth" that.

Any rust issues?

Has it been maintained? Regular oil changes? Or did she just add oil when the valves started rattling?

How is the interior?

That might be a decent deal if its in good condition.

You don't buy "cheap" cars from dealerships, reputable or otherwise.

They need to make money too, why pay a middleman? That's no way to score a $1500 deal.

I have an '03 Vibe, and my impression was quite different. I was surprise at how peppy it was for a 4 banger. Mine is going on 150k, and yeah, it's lost a bit of zip. I had a hard time catcing got blown away by a BMW M3 this afternoon even though I'd I got the jump on him.

1500 for a car with over 200k, how bad do you need a beater?

Not much under that from private sellers either.  The dealers are easier to find to look at cars to get an idea of prices.  Duh.
