There's an article in the December issue of Playboy about the Freedom Arms shoot in Germany, referring to the .454 Casull revolvers as "world's most powerful handguns". Umm...? I thought .500 S&W is the one, not the Casulls?

Playboy is not noted for their knowledge of firearms.  Just bazookas.

Well the BFR in .45-70 probably wins that contest
Or, depending on loads, there are some pistols chambered in .308

The most powerful handgun in the world is an elephant rifle cartridge stuffed into a single shot pistol. For sure.

Many years ago I fired a Jeffrey double rifle in 600 nitro. I like recoil ok but there is no way I would shoot that round in a handgun. IIRC the 600 nitro out of a 26" rifle barrel sends a 900gr solid downrange at about 2200 fps. Ow.

Honestly I dont think Pistols in Rifle calibers should count.

If we we did include them thu the 50 bmg pistol working prototype that was at The shot show last year would fit the bill.

If not it would be the 500 Smith and Wesson.

actually the .500 because of its bullet weight and velocity have more "power" than a .308 chambered single shot.

I've got an excel sheet made up, you plug in the bullet weight, velocity, powder charge and gun weight and it gives you felt recoil........

I just guessed at a powder charge but with your velocity and slug weight it's kickin' your ass with about 123. ftlbs of recoil  (a 308 only makes about 18ftlbs)

Edit: I forgot to figure in the weight of the revolver

You guys crack me up.
Thanks for the responses though, I figured they were wrong about it. That small mistake aside, it was quite a decent article, they also addressed some of the Hollywood bullshit gunplay. The issue also features Denise Richards, kind of a disappointment though...

I haven't been impressed with anything they've had in there lately...finally let my subscription lapse....I lost interest after the Rebecca Ramos issue....pretty tough to beat that

"Ah Ah, I know what you're thinking. 'Did he fire six shots or only five?' Now, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is the .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and could blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?"

The model 29 will always be the king of handguns

If you look at the specs on the BFR website,
you will notice that the S&W 500 cartridge
is more powerful than the 45/70.

The S&W 500 cartridge was designed to be a revolver cartridge.
It was designed to get the most out of an 8 inch barrel.

The 45/70 was designed to be a rifle cartridge, and optimum at
longer barrel lengths.

I believe the S&W model 500 revolver is considered the most
powerful production revolver.

That is funny.

Freedom, shooting and Germany all in the same sentance.

Yeah, the only place outside the US where Freedom Arms shoots are held is Germany.

Though I agreee it's probably the .500 S&W as a production item, my favorite goes to somehting I saw at a gun show and wish I had bought:  a .45-70 Derringer.  Now, I'm not saying I would have shot it, though it would have been hard to resist.
Link Posted: 1/13/2005 6:37:49 AM EDT
But will the 500 go thru body armor?
