You know, a hardware store in Wisconsin that offers many different types of bird seed used to call the finch food niger seed, but too many people mispronounced it and now the pc guys have it spelled nyger.  People really need to learn how to speak the English language properly.

Don, your post reminds me of a bumpersticker that I saw last week:

"Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?"

Could be the topic of so many threads. . .

I certainly don't want to push the limits, but my understanding of the etymology of the word 308 mentions, and that of the extremely offensive word that he makes a not so subtle reference to are unrelated.

Again, don't want to risk membership, but in many ways, the origin of the word "gyp" is far more racially offensive.  Again, I would never use, or even mention, this word, but in an academic discussion of language such as this.

The man's name was Howard, beekeeper.  If my source (web reference to the New York Post), is accurate, then the NAACP responded to the incident:

"NAACP Board Chairman Julian Bond opined that the precipitous acceptance of Howard's resignation was ''niggardly'' on [DC Mayor] Williams' part."

Don, am sensitive about sounding offensive, or even of approaching the line upon which I hesitate to approach.  I will delete this post immediately upon your request, even at the risk of sounding like an obsequious weenie. . .

Brings to mind the story of the politician, way back when, who called his opponent a homo sapien and accused his opponents sister of being a practicing thespian.
I liked the story in grade school anyhow.

Priapism is the occurrence of any persistent erection for more than four hours duration in the absence of sexual stimulation. Priapism is named after Priapus, the Greek god of fertility, and the son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. He was apparently an ugly, satyrlike man with enormous genitalia. He was the god of gardens, bees, goats, and sheep. According to the story, Priapus had a huge tongue, a fat belly, and his penis was so large that he was restricted to the position of scarecrow in the fields.

Most erections due to sexual stimulation never approach four to six hours. Priapism is not associated with sexual excitement, at least not initially, and the erection does not subside after ejaculation. Priapism can occur in all age groups, including newborns. Most cases of priapism are clustered between two age groups: between the ages of five to ten and twenty to fifty years. Priapism constitutes a true urologic emergency. Men often joke that they wish they could have a permanent erection, but in reality, men are extremely miserable when this actually happens.

I think they mean it's the highest lake that you can sail to or from. Other lakes may be higher, but their outlets may be too shallow, narrow, rocky, etc, to navigate.

I read a book once called "The Incredible Voyage," or something like that, about a Brit who sailed all the way around the world, including from west to east across South America. I think he was the first person to cross South America in a boat.
