Pulled out an Oehler chronograph i bought back in the late 90s and hadn't used since around 2001 or so to check some 9 mm loads.
I should have stopped when the tripod head I was going to use broke, but instead I just clamped the bar holding the sky screens to a picnic table. First 5 rounds were no problem. Sixth round went right through two of the sky screens, fortunately they are only like 35 bucks to replace, but thats still seventy bucks. What round for Oehler? Looks like 147 grain 9 mm subsonic. |
I shot one. Then I shot it's replacement. Now I just guess at velocity.
Many years ago, I shot a chrono in the face with an AR. Oops.
Lol. I've been shopping around for one, but have always had that thought in the back ofy mind when looking at the prices.
Yep. I was a dumbass.
I looked around and wondered if anyone at the range saw. Yep. Shit. I got mocked. |
My buddy shot one of the rods that support the sunshade first. Took me damn near a thousand rounds, but I finally got a rod to match it.
I have a chrono, but don't use it much anymore. I don't reload handgun ammo and with my rifle hand loads - I'm more concerned with accuracy than velocity.
When I did use it, my rifle was secured in a lead-sled and bore-sighted so it didn't hit the chrono. |
they all are going to get shot, just a matter of how long its going to take.
Perhaps if yours is not shot yet you should use it more. |
Me too. Sun was going down, and I kept bringing my shots lower to register across the screens. 200 gr Gold Dot out of a custom 16" Marlin 1894 chambered in 44 Mag. Chrony was DRT

While not as reliable an indicator of bullet performance as calibrated ballistic gel, a chronograph can indeed show evidence of expansion and fragmentation.
I know what round for crony. |

They still work and when you blow one up you dont feel as bad. Ive never shot one, probably only thru luck, but Ive sent them flying with magnum gas when they are to close and Ive seen plenty shot by better shooters then I. |
I've blown the screens off quite a few times with the 300Winmag. I move it out and don't do that anymore. |
No, but I've seen several get shot. Most by better shooters than me. |
well, I didn`t kill it, but I did crease the top of the housing with a .223 groove at about 3000 fps. Never remembered to mention it to
MrsScruff, as it was a Christmas gift. |
I have not yet shot a chronograph. Only because I've not bought one yet.
Magnetospeed here. I triple check my muzzle clearance before pulling that trigger for the first time.

View Quote Guilty. I shot the sensor...which wasn't much to replace. But then after replacing it, I sold it and bought a Magnetospeed. So now set-up is quicker, shooting the sensor is nearly impossible, and velocities are actually at the muzzle. Only thing that sucks is it doesn't work for pistol (without a rail), and sucks for AR's with long handguards (like a 15" handguard on a 16" barrel) so there's not enough room to attach it without removing the handguard |

357 mag 2" snubbie, just shooting a quick shoot through it to confirm it was reading right. Click, bang, skyscreen goes flying. Winged ine of the metal uprights that hold the skyscreen. Easily straightened it out there and was back up in a few minutes. My buddy laughed all day at me.
Fast forward a few years I bought myself a new one and gave him that one. He's shoot it twice since then. Karma. |

They say there are 2 kinds of people...
Those who have shot their chronos, and those who haven't shot their chronos YET |
I had to loan mine out to get it shot. No good deed goes unpunished.
My buddy shot mine with his ACOG equipped SCAR. Apparently, remembering optic height over bore was beneath him since he has the "sweetest rifle at the range!"
I haven't hit one with an outbound bullet, but I have chewed one up a bit with backsplash - does that count?

Over the years I've shot 4 Chrony's One more and I'll be an Ace.

The Kids gave me one for xmas a few years back, my son the Marine, then borrows it and proceeds to shoot it not once....but twice.....with a 300rum....just grazed the case both times....still works perfectly...

Bent the fuck out of a support rod with a really hot 10mm round.

There are 2 types of people: those who have shot their chronograph, and those who haven't yet shot their chronograph. Thankfully, I'm in the latter camp, for now at least.
I shot my master chrony with my 380 pocket pistol.
Still works. |
At first I thought what shithead would shoot a chrono- then bam. |
