I'm just curious whats considered the top dawg, they all seem pretty similar to me
they all hold about 8 rounds have about a 18.5 bbl... |
Lots of good choices out there, but I always go back to the 870 pump.
whats better, 870, mossberg 500/590 or the winchesters? |
IMHO of those three choices the 870, Winchester then Mossberg. |
had a saiga 12, an benelli m1, and a 870, the 870 is the one that i refuse to sell
The Saigas are very cool, but are now banned in CA.
The Valtro pump |
there are alot of mossbergs in use by the military are they any tougher than their counterparts?
Any quality pump gun. My choice is the ubiquitous Remington 870 Magnum 18 inch barrel with a bead sight. Remchoke would be a plus.
Depends on how much money you want to spend. I think the Benellis are the best, but they cost alot. The Berettas are good also. The Rems are next because they have many after-markets gadgets and gizmos to extend the usefulness for the 870 & 1100/11-87 family. the Mossberg 500/590 are about the same as the Rems, but they are less aftermarket parts. The Winchester 1300 series seems to be pretty good, but I've never fired one.
For self-defense, I prefer a pump over autos......jams happen, especially with shottys.
Having said that, Remington 870. |
The Remington 870 would be a good choice. The 870 has a proven track record and being a pump, its not ammo sensitive. There are numerous aftermarket items available to configure it to suit your needs.
I've got the 870 and a Mossberg 500, bought the 500 when money was an issue, and have since bought the 870 when money wasn't an issue. But I'm keeping both, have never had any problems with the Mossberg, but I do go to the 870 first if things come right down to it.
IMO Ithaca 37's>all. Only drawback to them is you have to buy a police version to get the 8 shot tube, as you can't add an 8 shot tube to one like you can with the 870. I also own an 870 Wingmaster and a 1100, still prefer the 37.
While the Ithica has a rock solid reciever, I've seen two that blew up because of the bottom eject (that's what took the blame). I was deer hunting with a guy when his KB'd and lit off every slug left in the tube. The solid reciever saved his face. Federal blamed Ithica. Ithica blamed Federal. |

I wish that I could say my SPAS was the best, but unless I was doing constant training with it, it becomes unreliable. It's just a safe queen in my eyes. Saying that, that is why my 18" barrels Mossberg 500 sits loaded under my bed ready for the go. It's simple to use and not a lot of tricky safety stuff to trip you up like the SPAS.
To each their own but my Mossberg has been totally reliable, next pump I buy will also be a Mossberg but probably a 590
My #1 pick is the Mossberg 590 w/ Ghost rings. Dont get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with the 870, but I like the safety positioning and slide release mechanism placement on the 590. It seems more natural to me.
For me it'd be the 870 for pumps and the M4 semi. That thing just chugged along on shot, buck, and slugs mixed.
Mossberg 500 with pistol grip and/or tactical tele stock. Dirt cheap and stone cold reliable.
+1. If you can have only one, I'd go with the 870 for simplicity. |
I like the Benelli Nova w/ ghost rings, just cause its the one I have and its never failed me.
I took Louis Awerbuck's Shotgun Course this year. He is definitely considered to be one of the most knowledgeable instructors on the defensive use of the shotgun.
During the class two Mossbergs went tits up. One of which was built by Hans Vang from Vangcomp. (Very surprising) Remington 870s prevailed and had no issues. Louis did say that he had trained thousands of Marines prior to deployment with their new Benelli M4s and he couldn't get the guns to jam. Pump: Remington 870 Semi: Benelli M4 |
Really? I have a bud who was S4 in a Marine MEU on deployment a couple of years ago. He managed to beg/borrow/steal as many M4 shotguns as he could find. Once they go to Falluja they were dumped because they were too big for breaching and clogged up on the baby powder sand over there. Mossbergs were obtained and worked fine. |
+ 1 |
Mossbergs are okay but compared to an 870, well the 870 beats it in every aspect.
Mossbergs are like AKs. (Yes, I own a 500 too.) My son has a Nova in 20g, it is a very good pump shotgun. |
Right now I've got a Winchester Defender with the steel, top folding, Choate stock that I like a lot, but the next time I see a deal on an 870 Marine Magnum I'll probably pikc it up. It is, IHMO, the best defensive pump shotgun made.
mossberg 590 with pistolgrip and side saddle, just what ya need next time the little fuckers try break into ya castle!!
Older 870 or a real 590 ( with metal trigger guard and safety)
the newer 870s and civi mossbergs have too many plastic parts for my tastes Nad for 1200/1300 I see those come in to our shop broken 10 to one over mossbergs and remingtons I would never own a 1200/1300 |
mossberg 590 hands down. not sure why everyone likes the 870 more, i think its all hype personally. kinda like oh...........1911s vs Glocks we all know glocks are far superior! or say tito ortiz vs chuck liddel.............chuck won. yeah, i like the mossberg 590 but hey..........different strokes
870, 870, and a 870
Just too easy to clean, keep clean, durable, after market stuff galore, looks better, you name it IMHO just the one to have. |
590A1 for me....(all metal, no plastic)
Got one with top folder on it and it is sweet....although that 1100 above is nice too... |
