I did a search for one of his songs and the results looked like a cross between an x-rated comedy routine and a klan meeting minutes.  How does he perform in public without causing a riot?

I don't think he does much of the x-rated stuff at his live shows.  He didn't do any of it when I saw him a few years ago.

Who says he doesnt cause a riot?

Whe I was younger, I worked security at a BIG CW bar that had him in concert.  With 3000 people we collected over 40 pistols, 4 shotguns and 500+ knives (over 3 inches).  We had Indianapolis SWAT on standby and about 50 off duty po po in the audience.

ETA:  I cant remember exactly but either he is a member of a motorcycle gang called Sons Of Silence or SOS wanted him dead because he's in a rival MC gang.

As i understand it his more vile music came from his post prison days.  I believe the song "N****r fucker" is pretty much a true story from while he was encarserated.  I think a lot of his later music and lifestyle resulted from his prison time and what happened while he was gone.

The Perfect Country And Western Song was preprison as I understand it.

Most of his stuff is funny if your not easily offended.

I've seen him a few times over the years.  I really like his stuff.  Jack Daniels if you please.  The Ride.  Good tunes.  He even wrote Take this job and shove it that Johnny Paycheck sang.

However, a few weeks ago there was this article in the Houston paper about him owing 292k in back child support.  Very disapointing.

If you think David Allan Coe is interesting, try Johnny Rebel.  My best friends room mate played some of his songs while we were drinking, they're all racist to the point of hilarity.

Brilliant and prodigious songwriter.  I saw him last year, but they WAY oversold the venue, and I had to leave.  Damned packed, it was.  Made me nervous.

Coe is an awesome songwriter who is overlooked due to his racist songs. He has done many good songs though, such as The Perfect Country Western Song, The Ride, and If That Ain't Country, You Can Kiss My Ass.

"David Allen Coe Rides Again" is one of the best albums of any popular music genre ever made. I've said that for years and I believe it to be true.

He used to be an extremely talented songwriter. However, through the years, I don't know. He just sort of...lost the talent or something, particularly after his wife left him in the late 70s, I think it was. The music was never quite the same after that. The songs became mediocre. "Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile" was really about the last good single he had and that was a totally different sound than his 70s stuff.

All the goofy so-called "X rated" shit? I've only listened to a couple of them. They barely qualify as music. They're that bad.

But his good stuff was really, really good.

Here's a comparison of D.A.C. and some guy in the Maricopa County Jail. I knew I'd be able to use this sooner or later.

But before I could get to the station in the pick-up truck,
She got run over by a damned old train.

His racism aside, I love his music.

Damn that song brings back memories!!

No joke. I'll have to dig out one of my many backup copies of "Rides Again" for tomorrow. That whole album is just friggin' killer. "The House We've Been Calling A Home," "Greener Than the Grass We Laid On," "Under Rachel's Wings," etc.

One of my all-time favorites.

And to think...I listen mostly to Jazz these days.

he has repeatedly claimed he's not racist. and even wrote about it in a couple of his books (yes, he's actually an author too).

and can a person with black friends be a racist?

i'm not saying that he is or isn't, just adding to the conversation..........
