My brother and I were just on the couch watching American Gladiators (hey it was 1:30 am) when I heard a car door slam.  The idiot that I am, I looked out the window next to the door just to give my car a glance to make sure my stereo wasnt getting stolen again (was stolen in march at a different location), when I was doing that I noticed that the car door noise was actually from a car parked 20 yards in front of me.

You see, I live at the end of a Couldasack (SP) at the end is a small roundabout, in the middle of the roundabout is some grass and a tree.  Anyways, the car is just sitting their suspiciously.

In the past there's been a truck that goes there sometimes, which always peels out when leaving, my dad once found a bag of marijuana on the lawn inside the roundabout.  A few months back the resident of the house two houses down was escorted from her house by a couple of Deputys on drug charges.

You can tell things are odd as people are always coming and going, low life scum people.  The kind of people who have to jumpstart their car everytime they want to leave, or try pushing it down into our roundabout to try and shift drop it to start.  Anyways, my ar15 is in my car, so is my wallet, and so is my stereo, coincidently I didn't park it in the garage tonight so I waited about 10 minutes.  I wanted the car to leave and things to be ok.  My brother was a little freaked out so I called the Sheriffs department on a call of a suspicious vehicle, did I do the right thing or am I wasting law enforcement time? I think it's better to be safe than sorry,

My only issue is that the passengers in the car may have seen me so stupidly look out the window and might now have some kind of vendetta against this house.  

And of course, the passengers in the car, were picked up by some other random car which came out of nowhere and they drove off just before the deputy came.  The deputy examined the car with his flashlight and left....

I'd say you did the right thing by calling.  It's better to call in 100 suspicious cars and have them all be nothing, then to not call in one and have it be your last chance.  

I wouldn't leave the AR in the car next time, but I'm sure you've come to that conclusion too.  

Thats what they are there for man. I called last night because I noticed a woman who was stumbling through my apartments and got into her car. I called and said she was drunk, she definatley was. About the AR and wallet, bring em in whenever you take em out. Better to be safe than sorry. You dont want any punks runnin around with your gun shootin shit up, then next thing we see on the news is a 15 year old arrested for having an AW... Doesnt look good either way....

1) Never leave anything of real value in a car.
2) Always lock your car, that includes inside your garage.
3) Always lock your garage, that includes the door from the garage to the house.
4) When you want to look outside, do it from a room/window where it is dark.

Call the SO when you are suspicious. If you had called immed. instead of waiting 10 minutes, they would've been talking with "johnny law" instead of just getting away. Often times burglars will park in one area and walk a short distance to burgle.

I don't leave my wallet, but there is a gat and $400 worth of sunglasses in my hoo-ride right now. You can't lock everything up all of the time, or at least I can't. I'd go insane worrying about stuff.

Besides, that is what insurance is for.

yea, i goofed up, as I mentioned I just had my car broken into in marh and guess I didn't learn my lesson right?  I had been out shooting and swimming all day and when I got home I just wanted to take a long bath.  That's the last time I do that.

You live in a cul-de-sac where there's a history of drug-dealing out of a house two doors down, drugs have been found lying on the ground outside your place, and strange vehicles come and go at all hours of the night....and you're leaving your wallet, your AR, and your stereo in your car, even though you've had your stereo stolen once before?  [rolleyes]

Don't mean to make light of the situation, but you need to wake up and start taking care of your stuff.  If your AR was stolen out of your car, you'd have a rifle traceable to you in the hands of some crack whore who might use it to shoot someone, and guess what?  YOU'D be liable.

1.  Never leave your wallet in your car.
2.  Never leave a weapon in your car that's just sitting out exposed.  If you've got your car in a garage, that's another matter.
3.  Invest in a car stereo with a detachable faceplate.

It's called tort liability.  Does "negligence" ring a bell?  You negligently leave a deadly weapon lying in your car unsupervised in a high-crime area with the knowledge that your car has already been broken into?  You could have put your car in the garage, but you didn't because you were too lazy?  A plaintiff's attorney dream case.

Do me a favor.  Graduate from law school before you start telling me I don't understand the facts.

DUM DE DUM, lets see, ive got drug dealers living next door, marijuana bags on my front lawn, my stereo was recently stolen from my car, i think ill use my car as a safety deposit box and leave my wallet and rifle in it, while im at it i might as well leave the keys in it, with a nice cold six pack in a lil cooler for the next thief to walk by.

i would never ever leave my identity and weapons in my car. your wallet is your identity, ID theft is big business, leaving your wallet in the car is not very smart, leaving an AR15 in the car is insane.

Besides all of the helpful crime prevention tips, you did the right thing.

If you do suspect your neighbor's house is moving lots of dope, take notes. Surreptiously (that means without getting spotted), not license plates, times and descriptuions of the occupants of vehicles. When you have a decent amount of info, dime them out to your local Narcotics Unit. With that much stuff, you will give them a good running start, and they will be much more likely to follow up on it, and will do a much more thorough job than a few chance encounters with Patrol grunts. With luck, you will be posting pics here in a month of all the cool SWAT toys you saw getting used on your cul-de-sac.

Oh, and don't leave weapons in your car. Ditto on the other stuff, too, but I'll add that one should also secure their garage door opener from vehciles parked in the driveway as well.

yea i was negligent, generally its a nice community.  We live in a neighborhood of 300k houses.  It's a good thing I've got a big dog who freaks at any activity and some good ears on my head.  I've learned my lesson...

I was stupid, but to answer an above question, no mags no ammo.  I keep my ar15 in two pieces in two different locations and then my mags in my backpack.  

p.s. there would have been no case had someone stolen a gun out of my car on my property and used it in a crime.  If you care to argue, go for it, I won't waste my breathe posting a rebuttle.

I've only lived here a year and seen the daughter of the house escorted out of her house by a team of Sheriffs Deputys... they know what's up there...

One more lesson to be learned, talk to your potential neighbors before buying a house, ask if anything suspicious goes on around the neighborhood etc.

Not anywhere near burglar proof, but if your gonna insist on leaving your ar in your car, get an ELS AR rack.

I think right here in Texas you can be charged if someone steals as unsecured weapon and uses it. They have to be secured to where a minor can't get to them.Or a thief. If they'te not in a safe or have a trigger lock, you're charged. correct me if I am wrong... fullclip
