september 1st marks the new fiscal year for my company.  I will have 72 hours of vacation that i will not be able to take with me meaning i will need to use it or lose it.

I hate taking vacation if i have nothing planned cause it just feels like i am wasting time at home.

we rent at the moment so i have no house projects or home improvement stuff i've been itching to do.

we are trying to save to buy a house, and i just purchased a newer vehicle, so i'm not really keen on dropping money to go somewhere

I'll probably hit up the range some but even then it won't be 2 weeks worth or range.

What do you people do when doing the stay-cation?

Get up, drink beer, rub one out.  Lather, rinse, repeat.

Take a long weekend every week until September?

Drive to the Grand Canyon and go camping.  It's fairly cheap...you can bring your food with you, camping isn't that expensive, just have to pay for gas.

It gets progressively harder,or softer depending on how you look at it, the longer the day goes on.

If you are saving up for a house then take the 2 week vacation and use it to make money.  Off the books if possible.  Uber driver, help a friend in their construction business.  Do something to add money to the kitty.

A mini mill has been a good hobby for me.  Perhaps a 3d printer if you rent?

Not work #1

What the hell I want to do #2

I'm on vacation for fucks sake. I'm gonna drink, smoke, not shave, dress in my underwear watch TV, sleep late. Maybe not all in that order but all of that, yep.

Last time I got into that position it was January and I went hunting.

For once California can say it kicks ass in this regard - under state law vacation time and personal days never expire here. Move to a free state

Go fishing.
Go camping.
Go swimming.
Go hiking.
Go riding.
Go to museums.
Take a class 1 day per week in a community college/trade school summer program (welding, language, ...)
Pick up a new hobby or expertise.
Explore.

You shouldn't have to go far or spend $$$ to find something to do.

3 day weekends for the next 9 weeks.

I prefer Fridays, but Mondays also have merit.

Do the local tourist thing and go visit attractions that tourists do. Tell them lies and legends about your town. Give them bad directions for fun. Be an ass in general. Take video and share.

The community college / trade school idea is actually pretty cool. Especially if you can get the company to foot the tuition in exchange for you attending training a few hours while you're on vacation. I've always wanted to do a real TIG welding course, although it has zero relevance to my job. Maybe a photography or music course?

Volunteer.  Check your local youth organizations.  Many have summer camps that need maintenance/repair workers or volunteer counselors.

how does uber work with a personal auto policy?  Pretty much every personal auto policy has exlusions for "commercial use".   Basically if they find you were using your car as a taxi, they can deny coverage for any claim made.

There are special rideshare insurance policies available.

If you don't have a money making opportunity for the full two weeks, go with 4 day work weeks.  On the first week, take Friday off, then on the second week take Monday off.  Repeat every other weekend.  This will give you 4 day work weeks for the rest of the fiscal year, and every other weekend will be a 4 day one.

Talk to your boss or HR. At my old company they let me "cash out" 40 hours of PTO as a "one time bonus" instead of having me missing for a week during their busy season. Otherwise take every Friday off for the next 2 months or something.
