Asus
I have built several desktop computers using various different brands of motherboards, not the cheapo stuff either. I had had a few problems here and there and the MSI MB had just given up the ghost. I asked a friend of mine that builds way more desktops than I do what brand of motherboard he uses. He said Asus. I looked at them and they were a little more expensive so I asked him why Asus. The reply was they always work and they always keep working. Since then I have used Asus motherboards for my builds and have never had a problem. They fit, they work and they keep working. So a few months ago I was looking for a new laptop and saw an Asus and got it. G750 It is sold as a rock and is a screamer. |

Lenovo ThinkPad.
Built like a tank. Or, you could get one of the newer ones ... the ThinkPad X-1 Carbon, if you really want to go nuts. |

Asus.
They actually build their own components. I've been working on laptops for 20 years. Asus is, hans down, some of the best built an well designed that can be found. Period. |

MacBook Pro. Buy once, cry once, love it forever. View Quote I'm going on five years with one. I just downloaded the new Yosemite OS. It's as up to date as anything else. Never a problem, virus, anything negative. I think next time I'll get the Macbook Air. Who knows when that will be as this thing just keeps on ticking. I like all the Track pad features. It's obviously a superior product. |

How are you going to use it??
I gave up the heavy ass Windows laptop for a Chromebook. There isn't anything I haven't been able to do with it yet... Sunday School lessons, powerpoints, etc... |

Lenovo's current laptops are not as awesome, but they're faster and still well built. If I were going to generically recommend a laptop brand, it would be Lenovo. |

Picked up a nice Dell 15.6 inch, i3 processor and touch screen for $500 at Costco.
I try to get my electronics there because you get an extra two years of warranty from them, free. |

Asus or Lenovo.
If you're the type who is daft enough to spend the money on a Macbook Pro, I'd suggest you look into and compare equally-priced (or slightly lower) Asus or Lenovo laptops. So annoying when people buy a $500 Toshiba (crap at any price), get sick of it not working, then switch to a $1300 Apple and declare Apple King of the Universe.

I don;t know if you have a desktop though. I wouldn't recommend a Chromebook as an only device. |

I buy everything from Dell. Their quality has really improved since Michael Dell took over again, and if you buy the refurbished stuff it's unbelievably cheap. Plus pretty much every month, they have a 20-30% off coupon for refurbished models. I got a $1200 new cost laptop for about $650.

MacBook works great, soooo sick of the windows based laptops. My family must have had five in five years that all crashed and burnt.

Surface Pro 3
Get the i5 with 8gb. i7 not worth the jump in price and heat. Macbook Pro? No. Go to a MSFT store or Best Buy and try out a SP3. |

OP said "laptop" and many do not consider a Chromebook to be a "real" laptop. We have two of them, and think they are great. |

My work computer is a Macbook Pro.
It's a battery hog, runs hot, and is rock solid. My best laptop I purchased was a Lenovo. Never had an issue, and I really liked the battery life, facial recognition, and DVD drive. I gave it to my son for use overseas, and it's still going strong after 5 years. I'm using a MS Surface Pro II. Small, fast, and has been nice to have a long battery life, multiple USB ports, and HDMI out. It's much lighter and smaller than the Mac, and I use it extensively for work when I travel. Windows 8.1 works fine with the touch screen. It's been a very good purchase. I added a blue ray external drive that can be run on laptop power so the kids can watch movies. |

It's obviously a superior product. Right there with ya. I picked up a 13" white plastic MacBook back in 08 at my last job. Slapped more RAM in it since it could be upgraded. Ran 2-3 VMs in Fusion on it for work every day for a year and a half. It only ever "purple screened" once, and I have no idea why. The touchpad gestures grew on me, and after I sold that MacBook, I'd tried a couple different laptops. I had a nice thin Asus ultrabook that was nice... and while it had some similar gestures, it wasn't as smooth. I then had a Core 2 Duo MacBook Air, but the CPU was a weak point. Sold it and picked up a Win 8 tablet. Not bad, but I really didn't like the tablet format. Now I'm back with a '13 Retina MBP. Got it for a good price since my roommate got laid off and it took forever for him to get his severance. He ended up picking up a '14 MBP. I'll never want to use any other 'laptop' format machine. Ever. And I expect this one will remain quite useful for at least a few more years! |
