what kind of phone do you have?

The last time I saw that option it was on a TDMA digital phone.  It was a redundant technology that was never really implemented.

Any digital phone currently in use is pretty secure.

It's a feature that if turned on let's the government tap all of your phone calls. Because obviously if you turn on a privacy feature you must be hiding something and then out goes the 4th.

The gubmint does that anyway. CALEA. Who needs to try and eavesdrop over the air when you can just plug in a tape recorder to the switch.

Modern digital phones are secure and use encryption over the air.
