I recently installed a video card in my computer. it is a geforce 6600gt agp 128mb. The advertised core clock is 500mhz with 1000mhz memory clock. I checked system stats with 3dmark05. It states that the core clock is 299.3mhz. I am using a 450watt ps. I'm using driver version 81.98. Any reason for the lower clock speed? Is there a different place I can check core clock?
Any help would be great, thanks.

google "coolbits" http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815 . it's a registry tweak for the Nvidia geforce drivers. it opens up a lot of hidden options for nvidia cards including showing you the core clock speed and allowing you to raise or lower it.

Get coolbits 2.0 from guru3d.com. A couple of new features, better for Forceware drivers.

ok, I found out that the benchmark is looking at 2d settings for some reason. The core clock is actually at 500mhz for 3d. My next question is how much can people typicaly overclock a 6600gt safely?

87 Ghz

Just try bumping the core and memory speeds up little by little, and test the hell out of it each time you do so. Every card, even by the same manufactuer, overclocks different.
