What if I carried a bunch of very sharp pencils or just a regular ole pen? I know they aren't as rugged as surefire/benchmade pens but I can still cause damage with them. The TSA is just plain dumb...

Am I going to get in trouble now?

Any standard metal pen can be used in that way.

Where it went screwy and caught the attention of the TSA is when they went all "tacticool" with the "its only a pen" (tongue in cheek)
Its like saying a knife is a "novelty letter opener" or brass knuckles are a "paperweight"

The tacticool crowd could not help but poke the bear and whines when they get their pepe slapped.

I doubt youd have any trouble carrying an all metal pen still.

If I had to guess I'd say it was probably a Benchmade pen.  They are the most obvious of the "tactical pens" I've seen.

No, but they're dead giveaways for profiling... TSA will ignore Achmed with the turban and the crazy khat eyes, but 5.11 pants will get you the rubber glove/KY treatment...

Pen - tactical, feather, ball point, felt-tip, or otherwise - does not appear on the list.

A screwdriver under seven inches is allowed though.

I believe that tools are prohibited too.  I travel with two stainless cross pens.  I figure they will work in a pinch.

When I was coming home from Iraq last year, TSA in Atlanta took my surefire flashlight because it had serrated edges.

I also handed over my pens and pencils, and he looked at me in a puzzled way. I simply replied I could stab you in the  eye with one of them.

He just nods and takes them.

Precisely.

But this is the part I enjoy the most:
The prohibited items list is not intended to be all-inclusive and is updated as necessary. To ensure travelers' security, Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) may determine that an item not on the Prohibited Items List is prohibited.

I fly all the time in 5.11s.  Went through TSA at least 5 times this week in them.  I have never been questioned nor given a second look.

They do sometimes ask about the Wilderness 'frequent flyer" belt though. They think the buckle is metal.

I have a stainless pen very much like that.  Definitely not "tactical," or officially a weapon.  I've been meaning to make myself an aluminum key chain bottle opener shaped like 4 inch " ) " that has a pen-sized divot in the center...

I refused and they called their boss. Boss said there was nothing they could do since i didnt have anything on me what was a weapon.

It's almost sad the way you deride a person who is carrying a fucking pen while supporting the notion that it's ok for a government agent to take a pen away from someone because it "looks mean."  Truly, the pen is mightier than the sword.

It is not OK for the TSA to smack anyone's peepee for carrying a fucking pen (or any other inanimate object).  The federal government, and their agents are specifically prohibited from doing so in the Constitution.  Since the 2nd Amendment is finally recognized as a civil right, perhaps you should grow a pair and get onboard with a little civil disobedience here and there.

I wonder about the kinds of pens I use.  Fountain pens are very pointy.  A Parker "51" even has a shrouded nib, making it pretty stout.
