Coworker says the engines always outlast the transmissions or even just clutches.

Power seems to be as good as 3.0 Vulcan .

If Chevrolet had used the Ford 2.3 engine in the seventies you'd still see Vega's on the road.

The ford 2.3 lasts forever, ime.

It's gutless as hell though.

Pretty much that. Beat the shit out of my dads shitbox 89 2WD Ranger as my first vehicle, couldn't kill it. He's had 4x4 versions of that truck and IMO, they're dangerously gutless. I'm sure the newer motors make better power, but the trucks probably weigh more too.

At my last job I had the duty to buy a company pickup for a new branch. Picked out an 09 Ranger 4cyl w/5spd. I asked a service advisor I knew, that I trusted, at the Ford house about it.

His response : bulletproof.

Ex Fordtech here.

That engine is the most indestructible automotive engine ever made.

Only problem is the older ones had the rope style oil pan gasket when it deteriorates it gets sucked into the oil pan and into the oil pump pickup, it'd rattle like hell to let you know, replace gasket and pick up and it's gtg never hurt a single motor it happened to, most other engines that that would happen to would be toast.

And as others have said turn off the ac if you want to go up a hill...

I've got 239K on a 1999 4 cyl Ranger.
Haven't touched the motor, clutch or trans.
It's a slug, but a reliable slug.

Hard to kill a 2.3. One of my employees has one with over 500k and the starter went out for the first time yesterday.

96 Ranger five speed here. 350k+miles. the engine has never been opened, just maintenance. Original clutch and gear box.
Last year I replaced it with an 08 4x4 3.0 six cylinder auto.
Better truck with the 3.0.
2.3 is bullet proof, but you need to rev it to get power.

My dad had one that he used hard and the only problem he ever had with the engine was a idler pulley went bad.

It is but it's got more power than the 4cyl it can go up hills with the ac on, and almost as reliable as the 4cyl.

As far as reliability goes:
4cyl
3.0 V6
4.0 OHV head gaskets blow but I got so good at them I can replace them in abou 3 hours....
4.0 SOHC garbage seriously garbage.
