that part about Kalishnikov not being rich kind of got to me
in any non communist country he would be off licensing fees for the design

Neither did John C. Garand. He was also a government employee. In fact, Congress refused to give him a bonus of any sort.

then Garand got screwed too. Hell, Ruger should be paying his estate royalties since they based the Mini 14 and 30 off his designs
Browning too if the gov't screwed him

Browning was an independant.  He'd sell his gun designs to governments and companies.  I'm sure he made a comfortable living.
