Strategy?

Civilization 2 and Sid Meier's Gettysburg! are two really good ones.

Both of those are good. Civilization 3 is also good, but takes alot of time to play.
I like the Battleground series as well. (Battleground Gettysburg, Anteitam, Shiloh, Waterloo, etc)
Chess is always good for an old school approach.

Axis & Allies, while a good board game, sucks on PC because the computer simply will not fight back. No challenge in it then.

Risk is suppose to be available in PC form, though I've never played it, I like the board game. It could be the same issue as A&A though so watch for that.

Depends on how hard-core you are of a strategy gamer.

If you are really into nuts'n bolts and operational-level detail, I woul recommend "Highway to the Reich" or "Uncommon Valor"; both are by Matrix Games.

Both have the advantage of also being able to play vs. a human player.

rise of nations is a good real world strategy game also, along with the age of ... series.
