That looks very good, but it's not the way I remember split pea soup.

Usually it's just boiled down peas and ham hock

Did you cook it with the hambone?   Gives it more flavor when you do.   You just made me hungry.

Cool!  Where did you get the bay leaf plant??  I've been looking for one but can't find any US vendors, only UK.  Did you grow it from seed?  I do a lot of Indian cooking.  In fact, I made some spinach dhal last night which uses split peas and one of the ingredients is a few bay leaves but I'd rather use fresh ones.

Looks excellent.  In lieu of tagging, I saved the pics and turned the text into an HTML file (and took the liberty of editing for spelling ).  If you can't copy directly off the screen, hit the quote button and copy/paste into a file from between the inner "quote" tags.

When Ma Danby was pregnant with our second son, she went in a nesting phase and started making a lot of hearty homemade soups and baking various hearty breads.  I put on weight faster than she did.

We usually glom on to at least one ham bone with meat after every biog family dinner.  Usually she makes a lentil soup. Dice and brown onions, simmer the lentils with ham bone.  peel the meat off and serve in the soup .  Dollop of sour cream on top.
