New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer on Tuesday announced that his office is working with the eBay Internet auction site to help prevent the sale of illegal stun guns to New York buyers.
"These are potentially lethal weapons and we want to make sure that state laws that prohibit their sale are enforced," Spitzer said.
Investigators in the Rochester branch of Spitzer's office began an investigation this year and confirmed that New York buyers could buy stun guns easily over the Internet despite their prohibition in the state.
Deputy Attorney General Marty Mack said he learned about the availability of the guns from his high-school-age son.
Posing as customers, investigators bought 16 stun guns, including a 900,000-volt Taser, a stun gun that looks like a cell phone and a stun gun that fires darts. Two of the sellers were in New York and have been referred to the district attorneys in their counties. Other sellers have been ordered to pay a fine.
Spitzer's office contacted the 16 sellers and now believes they've sold 1,100 stun guns to New York buyers since 2003.
EBay spokesperson Hani Durzy said as a result of eBay's conversation with Spitzer's office, the auction site will create a pop up message that informs New York buyers that stun guns are illegal in the state and authorities may be notified.
The site has always sent a message to sellers that it is their responsibility to not sell stun guns in states where they're illegal. Now, the message includes a list of the seven states.
"We have always had a policy against the sale of illegal stun guns," Durzy said. "We have decided to augment the way we deliver the information about that policy to our community."
