Whenever you're trying to impress a woman, tell her you were the door gunner on the space shuttle.

She'll probably believe you.

And if that doesn't work, tell her you are a mall-ninja. That always works.

I work with a guy who was a gunner for the AF Rescue Squadron who flew SAR for the Space Shuttle. He claims that it was made up by his unit.

Ed White was the original Gemini Door Gunner!

Link Posted: 8/18/2005 8:37:50 AM EDT
We used to tell it to to the Italian chics(probably red brigade members) who used to ask us what we did in the army when I was stationed there. That was back in 92.

I don't know how far back it goes.

This picture as always impressed me. Think about opening the door to the Gemini and actually LEAVING. Ole Ed is an American Hero - may he rest in peace.

Yeah, I dunno if I'd have the balls to do that, considering his buddy's instructions were to close and lock the hatch if he (White) couldnt get back inside, and then reenter without him.

White nearly expired on the first spacewalk because the dynamics of moving in a weightless envirionment were not fully understood. What was originally planned to be a 15-minute excursion lasted much longer because White was too exhausted to maneuver back in. We have Buzz Aldrin to thank for developing the tools and techniques to make working in space, well, workable.

America's early astronauts were truly a special class of men!

There is a little-known slightly unpleasant part of the modern-day Space Shuttle Door Gunner's job. He (or she) is responsible for shooting off the frozen stalagtite of waste from the toilet dump on the shuttle prior to re-entry. This task is colloquially known as "Picking off Klingons!"
