I want to get an assault rifle before the ban. what do you recommend to them?

eta: other than "assault rifles are select fire, what you mean is semi-auto"

Whats their budget.

Theirs alot of evil assault rifles out there.

Ar-15  or Ar-10. Pricey       5.56/.308                  700-1300

AK47 variants cheaper       7.62x39                    400-700

Cetme/PTR91 pricey        .308                           600-1200

FAL pricey       .308                                          never looked into a fal.

Tell him to get a base model AR and then teach him marksmanship - he will be hooked, proficient, and will go off on his own for AKs,FALs, etc.

That's the key to the whole thing these days.

by the time he is proficient that may not be an option

I refer them to subguns but also mention semi-auto versions can be had for a lot less money and less hassle.  Then I tell them they should probably look at AR's and AK's.  I tell them the AR is generally more accurate and nice to handle and the AK tends to be rougher around the edges but is known for its reliability.  I tell them to check out Atlantic to get in at the $600 range.

if his cash flow allows it, he needs to buy a quality AR.

it will look good to everyone he shows it too....
parts will still be easy to come bye.....

and when he sells it in 2 years, there will be a larger number of people looking to buy an top of the line AR over some used ak47

and he will make money on the sale.

Pretty much. Since money is probably going to be the main consideration with them, I'd go over the cost of each type of rifle along with the cost of ammunition and magazines for it. If money isn't a problem, I'd steer them toward an AR.

Not anymore unless you get lucky. The cheapest AK I've seen post-election was a $498 Romanian "G" screw build with one screw missing.

tell him it would be cheaper to get an Ar-15 before spending money on a tax stamp and the cost of an "assault rifle".............

Well it depends. If he is a really good friend help him get/build a quality AR. Easier to shoot for a newbie than an AK and doesn't look as Terroristy.

If he's not a great friend and voted for Obama, get him a Glock. It will likely Kaboom and take out a dirty lib!,    JK.

Supervise them while you teach them to build their own.  You can gather parts to save a bit of money.  You'll have them hooked for ever. That is how BRD spreads.

Good luck finding parts before the you-know-what is passed. I think you'll have better luck searching for complete rifles.

Everyone can at least afford to buy a stripped lower and build it as their funds / desire allow.

Better than your friend saying, "I don't need to buy a gun. If the shit hits the fan, I'll just come over to your house..."

I wonder why it was necessary for you to include this, when you knew EXACTLY what the OP meant.

If TSHTF my place might turn into a sort of fucked up post apocalyptic sitcom with three ex-GFs, an ex-wife and me.

I was partly being funny (or trying to) but I've had people ask me about obtaining FA since I used to have an M-16 and currently have some other NFA stuff.  When they do I really refer them to subguns.

And it wasn't "necessary".  It was discretionary just like your post and all the other posts.

does it really mater? the more gun owners the better, no matter what side of the spectrum they are on. some people base their political choices on more than just one issue

It's a losing attempt to fight the battle against LWM disinformation.

It matters to me.  I won't talk to people that voted for the Obamamessiah outside of what is absolutely necessary.  I have dumped friends because I suspected they voted for him.  Obaminites can rot in hell for all I care (in fact I hope they do.)

That being said, if they passed that little test  I would tell them the advantages of various guns, get them to handle or shoot a few, and steer them towards building a decent AR.  That depends on their budget as well, I well handled SKS or Mossberg 500 isn't a bad thing.

Have him join the NRA as a sign that he is serious.  After he does this, then you should help him out.
