[ARCHIVED THREAD] - so who else "deep sixes" themselves on the weekend?

Anymore, for the most part I pretty much disconnect on the weekend. Phone gets turned off, email does not get checked, the tv or radio does not get turned on and I am also spending less and less time on the internet.

Reasons for this are:

1) After a week of interacting with electronic devices at work, I have little desire to deal with them in my free time.

2) People...frankly can't stand 90% of the people I deal with at work..a few are ok, but the rest are not. End result is me wanting to have time to myself on the weekends and not have to deal with others..

This isn't every weekend mind you..but does account for the vast majority of my time off..

I'm the IT network manager at a place that runs 24x7 every single day of the year. I've been recalled to work the last five holiday weekends ... I'm standing by for the phone call tonight during the fireworks.

Sadly, I am an IT guy and don't get the luxury of turning everything off. Part of my job is being on call incase shit breaks. Fortunately, we've spent a lot of money and time on a solid network and security and things rarely break, but I still have to be on call. I'd love to just check out for a couple months.

IT guy here. I'm pretty much on call 24x7x365 unless I request a week off for vacation or something, and generally monitor work email all weekend.

I don't mind it. My employer is extraordinarily flexible with schedules and telecommuting (I already work about 50% from home), and if I need to leave early or take a day to go do personal stuff, the request doesn't even get out of my mouth before they're saying 'go on, we know we can get you if we need you'. If I need to put in an hour or two on a weekend or holiday, I consider it more than a fair trade.

I used to have to work EVERY July 4th. Sucked. ODDLY ENOUGH folks here in Kenya do not celebrate July 4th nearly as much as they do in the USA.
