I've downloaded some software using a torrent, but someone had to literally walk me through it.  I just cannot get my head around how it works.

But you can figure out limewire... they're just as easy or complex to figure out.

download this client

http://www.utorrent.com/

Now search using Google for anything you want.  simply add the word Torrent to your search.

click the torrent link on whatever site you find and the client opens up and downloads your file.

Limewire was just a client for gnutella & BitTorrent...

Not it's own network....

There's something strange about using BitTorrent for a 3mb file (like an MP3) though....

Seriously, Limewire is no more?  I guess I am way behind the times, too.  I just used them within the last couple of weeks, and didn't have any problems.  Of course, I have noticed they keep sending me prompts that it needs to be "updated", but I haven't bothered.  Should I simply delete it all together from my computer?

Limewire the program will keep working even though limewire the company is gone...

There just won't be new versions....

Hell, they must have just updated in the last couple of weeks.  I've used it off and on for the last couple of years, but recently it become very problematic.  So, I uninstalled it from my computer and reinstalled the newest version, which was less than 2-3 weeks ago.  Within a week, it was prompting a new "update".

UPnP was optional. You didn't have to use it. You could use manual port forwarding and open up just one port on your router.

What's not organized about Limewire?  All I had to do was double-click the icon, type in the songs I wanted, and went from there.  Seemed fairly simple to me...

60% of the fubar'd computers I fix (for extra money) have Limewire on them.

I never used it, but I will miss it.

Is there another overtly dangerous and virus-laden software alternative I can recommend to people?

1. Sites like Rapidshare & Hotfile, a premium membership costs like $7/month and is well worth it, direct download from a file serving website, no uploading to the MPAA or RIAA.  Use a program like Jdownloader to queue up a bunch of RARs.  Lots of indexing sites that post new releases and links.  Almost no virus or fake crap.

2. Usenet, costs money too (unless you have a good provider that doesn't block all the good stuff), a little harder to learn, but a wealth of data to pick from, some pay sites have up to a year of retention. Almost no virus or fake crap.

3. IRC.  Old school, harder to search, but have been a backbone for the last decade.  Almost no virus or fake crap.

My buddy loves usenet, I like my hotfile account.

Well shit man, I would probably just keep things on the up and up and drop 99 cents per song on Itunes.

it's not really the .99 cents, but I want an actual mp3 that I can burn onto a CD

Frostwire for single songs.  If you are computer illiterate don't use it because you will get a virus, much like Limewire.

Vuze for the majority of everything else.
