The problem that I found is that you need to keep the barrel 18+ inches.  With the length of the receiver, the end of the shotgun barrel sticks out past the end of the AR's 20 inch barrel.  This just doesn't look right.

I made my own mounts.  I used the pre-drilled scope mount as the rear attachment point, and fastened to the vent rib near the front of the barrel.

I believe this is legal. I've seen rifle/shotgun combos in .223 and 12ga. not sure about one for the AR though.

I used to see them in the back of Shotgun News all the time, but not in quite some time now. Osa is absolutely correct about the barrel length. It sticks WAY out past a 14.5 or 16 inch barrel, so much so it becomes a hazard.
Someone (I can't remember who) had an adaptor for the 37mm launchers advertised to convert for use with 12GA shells, too. This would make it an AOW though. Plus, to my mind, this would be as inaccurate as hell unless the target was within 5-10 meters or less.
I just sling the shotgun. :)

If you look on page 43 of the 5th Edition of The Gun Digest Book Of Assault Weapons, there is a photo of a Remington Model 870 shotgun with a Knight's MWS mount on an M4 with the 14.5 barrel.

Went to the Knight's website(www.knightarmament.com), but could not locate additional information about this.

Sure looks possible from the pics.  Could you get the shotgun registered?

I wonder if there is anything else (that might be useful) you could mount under your AR-15 with these mounts……

They are legal, depending on your local laws.  They are specified as an AOW (Any Other Weapon)  and will cost $5 for the paperwork to the BATF plus about 60 days waiting on the OK from them.
