just watching the history channel about demilling nukes, and got to thinking, why cant we shoot them into a dark spot in space, wouldnt it be cheeper?  they would only need to pay for the rocket fule.

the best part is that you would stop hering all the complaining from the Hippies about yucca mountain and other such facilities

Rockets aren't reliable enough, and there is an immense amount of waste to be disposed of.   What if a rocket breaks up on launch in the high atmosphere?  Radioacticve waste in the jetstream, not good.   It would also cost much more than Yucca mountain.

I think it costs more than $5,000 to send a pound of material into space.

The plutonium 'pits' must be saved for future use with newly designed physics packages.

We are going to need them, all of them.

project orion FTW

heh as my screename says....

we need to use nukes to get into space

The air pollution from sending the millions of tons of radioactive waste we have into space would probably kill us all. I say we just dump it in Mexico somewhere

Re-enrich that stuff and reuse it in the power plants!

Screw the arms treaties.

I allways wondered what would happen if we shot it into the sun.

$5K is for LEO which you don't want, $10,000 for geosynchronous which would probably work, might want to shoot it straight out of orbit, it's the only way to be sure And fissile material tends to be pretty dense eh?  Add to that the risk of an explosion, no way it will happen with current technology. .mil just approved a project today that would develop a launcher that is basically an enormous rail gun, this *might* be viable if this launcher works.

they should have used them to turn a certain region into a glass factory

Pretty sure most of our waste is actually still quite full of energy potential, but maybe I'm mistaken.  Pretty sure you could re-process it and use it to power more reactors, wouldn't surprise me if some newer technologies in the near future could make use of it as well.

Funny enough, France does that, but some stupid piece of paper some idiot former president of ours signed precludes us form reprocessing fuel.  The word "nuclear" is just like "gun".  The mere mention of it changes the rules and causes irrational behavior.

It's not going to nearly as funny when this little idiot comes back w/ a bunch of 'em to kick some Earthling ass.

I was discussing this with an engineer I worked with a few years ago.

He had a pretty good plan of using some weird rocket technology he'd worked with in the past to launch nuke waste into the sun. It was actually a damned good idea, and very cost effective compared to most of the launch technology used today, but the whole concept of launching nuke waste just never sat right with me - if one of them had a failed launch, or worse yet blew up once it caught air, the damage would be horrendous.

That woul be really really really bad. Dump too much waste into the sun and you'd turn it radioactive. It might even start glowing in the dark!!!!

You think global warming is bad? Think about how much worse it would be with a radioactive-glow in the dark sun as well. That would make everything sooooo much worse.
