You every get knocked around or strain something and see the bright little "stars" in your vision for a short period afterward? What the hell causes that???

If things are scrambled, so is the signal - it's your brain trying to interpret what it's receiving

Fun Fact.

Most blind people can see those stars.
They can also feel that aurola-like haze that you get when you rub your eyes.
