Normally I know better than to open your threads but I was curious what a "liqer cycle" is. I still don't know.

He means mopeds, that people get stuck riding when they lose their license.

They slow up all the traffic around Richmond and generally piss everyone off.

Scooters.

People seem to think you can drive one when you lose your license due to a DUI.

Not true.

Good. While I can kinda sympathize with people who cannot otherwise afford wheels I am sick and fucking tired of assholes holding up traffic for miles while going 25-35 mph in a 55 or any other speed zone higher than their top speed. Thank you to those who pull over and let traffic pass but too many asshats refuse to let traffic pass.

I think he's referring to what we call "DWI bikes" (ie small enough dirt bikes that are somehow road legal but don't need to be registered).

I've heard the term "Liquor Cycle" many times, maybe it's a regional (Virginia) thing?

Link Posted: 10/27/2013 1:42:18 PM EST
I used to work at a motorcycle shop in Raleigh, NC. We sold about a half-dozen of these per month:

The funny bit is that there is a fairly substantial aftermarket parts business for these little bastards. Why?

Because, in NC at least, mopeds had to have working pedals, no more than a 49cc two-stroke engine, and a fairly restrictive exhaust. It was common for folks to spend $700 on these things and immediately drop another $200 in 'upgrades'.

Stock, mopeds top out at 20mph.

With an aftermarket pipe and expansion chamber I've seen these little bastards hit 50mph. (Admittedly, that guy also had an 80cc kit.)

Knowing what I know about the brakes and build quality of these things, anything over 25mph is insane.

OP has too many DWI's so he drives a scooter to the liquor store.

But now the state wants people to have a valid drivers license to operate a scooter and OP is pissed they are closing this loop hole and he won't get his booze.

Am I right?

In Michigan, the way the law is written, you can. Sorta.

I used to work with a dunce of a guy who didn't give a shit about anything and had a felony record for repeated drunk driving arrests.

While riding his liquorcycle he's been stopped a few times. In Lansing, MI, the judges interpret the law as scooters with engines below 50cc have no licensing requirement for adults. Down the road in East Lansing the judges will have none of that and you'll take the full hit for driving on a suspended license.

In one city you're safe. In another you aren't.

On one hand, those things are a POS that slows down traffic when people ride them on the wrong streets.
They are also very popular with "thugs" in my area, and there are a shitload of robberies in my area with people on these because they are a cheap getaway ride.
A couple of local pawnshop and payday loan places have become dealers and you can get one for like $800 new.

On the other hand.. it is cheap transportation and yet another way the .gov is fucking over people and taxing them yet again..

So.. Freedom and free use of your property, or a fight against "inconvenience".

Having to register it and having to have a license to operate it are two entirely different things. Shouldn't make any difference other than the state sounds like they need some more revenue.

Actually, no. You need to have a valid DL to register it and once its registered it will require insurance which you will need a valid DL to get also. But as far as being a " Liquor Cycle " goes, its not that either. If you lose your license for any reason, you may not operate a motor vehicle on the road, any vehicle including a scooter. If you have a bicycle that has had the little gas motor kit installed then you ant operate that either without a license. This whole thread is pretty worthless.

Good.

They want to use the roads, they need to play by the same damn rules as all the other vehicles, INCLUDING LAWS AGAISNT IMPEDING THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC!

Registration with the city is already required. The new law will require registration with the Commonwealth.

Interesting story about a guy a few years ago who rode a scooter all over Virginia. Turns out he is legally blind ("I see colors and shapes") and can't get a drivers license. The state couldn't figure out if he was legal or not since technically you don't need a license to operate one.

I wonder what ever became of it? I'll have to do some diggin'...

1. No, you don't need a DL to register a moped.

2. No, you don't need to have insurance on a moped. See, e.g., 46.2-705 and 46.2-721. The "new" law specifically took mopeds out of the insurance requirement.

It doesn't say that anywhere, nor does it say anything about insurance being required.

It says if your license is suspended or revoked for DUI (which is only one of many reasons that can happen) you cannot drive a moped on public roads, but I cannot find any actual code section that supports that. Please post one.

no, it says DMV considers any that go over 35 mph to be a motorcycle thus requiring insurance . for arguments sake, they pretty much all go over 35 these days. its not very hard to go 35 on one.
