For those that have seen the movie HEAT, I have a question.  Remember right before the big bank robbery scene when Robert Deniro is in the diner, on the phone with Danny Trejo?  D. Trejo says he can't meet up with them because the cops are on him.  Specifically, he says the police "are running parallels".  Could someone please tell me what "parallels" are?

"Parallel" is a type of surveillance used when police cars are following a suspect car, but want to remain unnoticed.  There are other types of vehicle surveillance.  It usually depends on how many cars are involved.

What specifically is going on when police are runnning "parallels".  What's the formation, etc.
