So.. my computer crashed and tells me there is no operating system on the disk.  I take the hard drive out and put it an another computer as a slave.  The second computer tells me I need to format the drive (I did not take the computer up on this suggestion.)  Is there anything else I should try so I can possible recover some information on the hard drive?

Thanks

Had good results recently on a malfunctioning compact flash card.  My box indicated that the card needed to be formatted.  Used this program -

To grab all the photos off of the card.  Haven't tried it on a HD yet;  last time I had the problem you describe the master/slave trick worked.

Link not hot 'cause I'm lazy.

thanks for the help.  I've been talking to Sony.  In my case I was able to press F10 in the bios and reinstall the operating system from a special portion of the hard drive.  It looks like the HD is okay, the operating system had the problem.
