I read it all. It was very well done.
The disaster was caused by inept individuals in positions of power and not one of them was fired, prosecuted or fined.
It reminded me of that horrible school collapse in China.
Cliffnotes for those who suffer from the attention span of a goldfish:
Welsh coal town situated in a valley with steep sides.
Coal waste (bits too small to be profitable) are piled on the tops of the surrounding hills as that land was worthless.
Too much waste was positioned on a steep hill that was unstable in the best of times- there was a spring (water) underneath the mess that provided the lubricant for the resulting slide.
A school was positioned directly down slope from the mess.
The resulting slide smothered the school and 116 children and 28 adults died.
The National Coal Board was warned beforehand by an engineer that this could happen.
The chairman of the NCB was a f'ing toolbag Lord Fauntelroy type who ignored the warning.
The charity set up to compensate the victims was perversely controlled by the National Coal Board. The charity had millions to work with.
They actually asked how close the parents were to their children as they refused to compensate those parents who were "distant".
50 pounds was considered per child for compensation, but that was raised to 500 pounds but too much money would be considered "disruptive" to their blue collar lifestyles.
Survivor guilt, PTSD, and the lack of mobility added to the misery. Early deaths, suicides, alcoholism, etc.
