Hi all,

A friend of mine asked me for some advice on a handgun for him.  Here is his criteria:
1. around 300- 400 bucks
2. very reliable
3. very accurate
4. he is a lefty so a ambi safety would be nice

I recommended the cz 75b for the price range.  any other ideas?  used might be a good idea.  He said he saw a good deal on a ruger.  I told him to hold off until i get a list of options for him.

Thanks
Lojack

I'd look for a 1st Gen Glock for $400.  I know there are some listed on EE right now.  I think you can also get a Beretta 92 for around $400 if you look hard enough.

Has your friend considered a .38/.357 revolver?
Ambidextrous, very reliable, and most service revolvers are much more accurate than most service autos.
The best part is that used S&W or Ruger revolvers are commonly available for around $250 – at least in this part of the country.
With the other $150 your friend can buy a case of ammunition or get a head start on a reloading set-up.

I think I paid around 325 for my 92F.

the only thing I DON'T like about it is the safty is kinda too far away for the thumb.

I second Maddock re/ the used .357, look for a police trade-in like a S&W 686.  Those babys have been armorer maintained, carried a lot, and generally shot very little.  Mine is a tack driver.  Ambi-yes, reliable-yes, accurate-yes, price-WAY less than $400.  Speedloaders are a whole lot cheaper than magazines too, and if you find yourself needing more that 6 well placed shots methinks you're in the wrong line of business.

I'm going to have to go with the other guys and say the Beretta 92F.  Good, reliable, and not that expensive.

A Taurus PT-99 is/was a pretty good handgun. Ambidextrious, takes high caps, and even has adjustable sights. Mine was accurate and reliable, should have kept it.

I'd go with a Ruger P-series. You can sometime find them brand new for under $300. My first gun was a Ruger P89 and I never had it jam and I ran about 3000 rounds through it. Might want to look at the Springfield XD pistols as well.

Right now AIM surplus is selling used Sig P228's for $400. Can't get much better than a Sig.
