Breaking in some new boots for next fall's hunting.

The most important thing foe me in Washington, is water proofing.

That being said, should I treat the leather ? Will it affect the goretex liner?  Breathability?  Durability?

Mink oil?
Kiwi polish?
Sno-seal?other?
nothing?

Pics in a second.

Those pics of your wife's ankels are a bit racy.  Have you considered a BOTD thread?

+1

Sno-Seal and work it in with a hair dryer on the low setting. Just enough to melt the sno seal and get into the pores of the leather. Will waterproof and soften those boots like you wouldn't believe.

How does Obenhauf's work on leather motorcycle seats - anyone ever tried the stuff?

I use it on my boots, tack, slings, holsters, etc.

I works great, but you would want to let it dry before you ride on it, it will leave a little greasy residue until it permeates the leather.

Your boots are nice.  They are not designed to be water proof, too much fabric for breathing.  They will leak no matter what you do.  The leather portion will need attention eventually and any SYNTHETIC oil or grease will do. I have used everything  from bearing grease to unsalted butter, bees wax+ 10-30 oil.  Leather needs to breath.  If you need to be completely free of water then you need a packboot of some kind.  Just wear them, break them in, and enjoy your hunting trip.  Waxes will keep the water out but will keep them from breathing.

+87 ON THIS!

I was a yard ape at a local switch yard and the shit on the ground and 3/4' rail bed beats the shit out of boots.  Like 3-6 months max before getting a new pair.
I was bitching about having to drop another deuce for boots and a fireman buddy of mine told me of the godly grease and it saved me about a grand in boot replacement.

Okay. I just got some.

I have some sno seal too. Should I do a left boot versus right boot test?

No.

Sno-Seal works great at keeping moisture out, at the expense of the leather.

Trust me, my feet earn me a living and harvest game.  I have had more than one pair of boots die early due to Sno-Seal.

Roger. I used snoseal on some work boots once and they died quickly. I wonder if thats why.

I just lubed up the boots with the obenaufs. They are sittin on the boot drier as we speak.

Do you retreat them after say 6mos hard use?

I do it as often as needed.

Usually, I will rub some on about every 2 weeks (Coal mine) and let it sit overnight, no heat.

I will use heat during the winter to "bake" it into the leather...low heat over time, though.

I think you'll like those boots.  I have a pair of Irish Setter Shadow Treks.  Awesome boot for the money.

If you keep the LP off the fabric, you shouldn't have any problems.

Sno-seal was originally designed for old-school leather mountaineering boots that were intented to be used with crampons.  Given other options that are currently available sno-seal is a rather poor choice, but most people don't know it.

If your boots are really seeing a lot of consistent, hard use you'll probably want to treat them a lot more frequently than once every six months.

Oh and +1 on the Obenaufs, I also use a boot oil Nicks, or Obenaufs, keeps leather nice and supple. I'll usually oil and then apply the grease over the oil. Keeps the leather in good shape but strips pretty fast in icy snow, just have to reapply more often to keep waterproof.

Re Oberhaufs :

This stuff is quite "greasy" or "oily".  Does this go away after a while?  Should I wipe excess off with a cloth? Ijuat applied it with fingers like directions said.

If you have Goretex do NOT use the Obenaufs or Sno-Seal. Use something like nikwax that is approved for use on goretex footwear. Check the boot manufacturers website for what they recommend.

I'm tired of these jokers coming into the store complaining that their boots don't breathe anymore after they used sno-seal on them.

[#41]

Obenauf's is approved for use on leather boots with Goretex, but I doubt that sno-seal is ... which is yet another reason to avoid using it.

Regarding the "greasy" factor of the Obenauf's ... it should continue to dissipate, but it's important to remember to apply it thin.  You can always do a couple of coats if necessary but always apply it in very thin/light coats.
