Ok, so no gaming. What else do you want to use it for? Do you want to watch YouTube, Hulu, or other flash videos? Do you want to hook it up to a TV? What about screen space for surfing? Are you going to do any photo or video editing? What about size, mobility, and battery life? What are you looking at paying?
We'll try to point you in right direction, but we still need to know more. |

If by 'general use' you mean web browsing and light office app use, you won't be able to buy a computer that can't do those things handily. Even the slowest netbooks around can handle simple tasks like that without straining.
The devil is in the details of what you want to do with it though. First decide what your budget is and how much you expect to travel with it. Then figure out what your graphical needs are- screen size, quality, speed. |

I don't want anything too small, and I prefer decent battery life. So for the following price ranges, can you give me ideas on minimum specs for processor speed, hard drive size, RAM, etc.? $500-750 $750-1100 $1100-1500 $1500 + |

I just bought a mid range HP with a good sale going. 4 gb of ram and such. I get it tomorrow, ill let you know how it is.

Basically, if you can get a laptop that has a 64-bit dual-core Intel processor, at least 4GB of RAM, and runs a flavor of Windows 7, you'll be set. Wait to buy one for one month, since Windows 7 is released next month. Don't forget to buy an accedental damage warranty! I can't tell you how many times I've gotten a new computer for free because of those warranties!

Im not sure if all the companies are doing it but it makes the OS a little bit of a moot point. |

What exactly are you going to do?
Surf and write stuff, you can get by with the cheapest thing you can find. If you're going to do multimedia editing, shoot for something on the mid-high end. Anything 3D, look for a high end laptop or a desktop. |

I personally would not buy a computer that was lower than:
1.6 GHz processor 2 GB RAM 160 GB Hard Drive Anything less than that and you're going to be running too slow. |

3GB RAM + depends on the operating system you will be running.. Vista is much more of a hog than Windows 7.. If you will be running vista do yourself the favor and get atleast 4GB RAM. |
