And they have it on amazon less expensively than ordering it from the link on my computer which had a trial preinstalled.

I am confused about licensing and upgrading though, it's my understanding that if I get the amazon version in a box, I can install it on 3 computers, but if I order it off the web from micosoft, I can only use it on that computer.

I have also read a review from someone that had trouble putting it on a computer with previous versions on it. My plan is to uninstall it first, then reinstall it from the disks. I have a product key for the version that is on it now and I figured uninstalling it first would prevent any product key conflicts, if there is such a thing.

I'm planning on getting the student version from amazon for 116 bucks, I want to make sure I won't have any problems though before i do this.

If you don't have to have msoffice , try www.openoffice.org

We use it on all of our office computers.

ETA: .org, not .com

Definitely uninstall first.

You can get office 2010 now, so don't buy 2007.

The student version may be different, but generally you can only install the program on one computer.  If needed, you can re-install it on the same system up to 3 times, which some people think lets them use it install it on three systems...

I kind of want office though, people I exchange documents with use it, and I have been using it. I just want to make sure I get what I am expecting to get.

And I'm concerned about installing over previous versions, or previous bits.

Open Office will work with all of Micro$oft's formats and vice versa. I use Linux Mint 9 which includes Open Office and I've never had any problems with OO opening and working with .DOC files.
Best of all...IT'S FREE!!!!!!

Damn! I almost missed that!

The 2010 is 124, maybe I will get that. I guess the reinstallation thing is not a problem for now. I will probably get another computer though in a few years and would want to install it on that.

Uninstall the trial version. If you upgrade the trial you are effectively installing an "OEM" copy. OEM copies die with the machine. Buy the boxed copy from amazon. I am unaware of the ability to "legally" install in on three machines, but at a minimum you will be able to install it on your next machine when your current one goes TU. The only thing better than a boxed copy is one of the flavors of Open license but those dont apply to most home users. I'll second the post about getting 2010. Not much different than 2007.

FYI: you can set your preferences in open office to only save in microsoft formats. We use it on some of our production facility machines with no complaints. On the corporate side the biggest issue is the lack of Outlook but if you arent using exchange mail, that isnt an issue. Its a free download and worth checking out.

YMMV

Is newegg cheaper than amazon?

nm.... same price

I'm having to run openoffice right now to read things, but I prefer office too. I like Outlook and Publisher though, so that means I have to purchase the expensive version.
