Ad-Aware SE

Spybot: Search & Destroy

Spyware Blaster

Microsoft Anti-Spyware
(yes, believe it or not... They just bought an existing, very effective program)

Get them, learn how to use them (important!) and you won't have ny more issues

Ewido Security Suite is good, but it's a trial use only and will expire in <insert correct period of time here.  A month?>

Edit:  Your mileage may vary, but I've had better luck installing all the security/adware/spyware tools, then rebooting and actually running the scans in safe mode.  Some of the more malicious programs will live in memory and rewrite themselves to disk once they are removed.  And +1 on the above poster about MS antispyware.  It's good.

Micrsoft's "Windows Defender" is very good if you run a Full Scan.  I have yet to find a System that It couldn't clean up.. And its free.

Has anyone else had trouble getting Spybot to update?  Microsoft has a page saying the problem is unsolved.

I continue to have excellent results from using both AdAware and SpyBot S&D.

I use CCleaner and RegClean as part of my standard maintenance package, too, though they are not ad/spyware targeted.

Sometimes if a page doesn't work, you need to hit the "refresh" button a few times to connect.

+1  We also have gppd luck with the MS Defender product.  Best way to avoid spyware is to not run in administrator or power user mode.

trendmicro has Housecall which is a Java based scan service.  It works really well, but it is not an active defense like some other ones

Anyone else try Spyware Doctor?  I've had good luck with it, and it's found stuff Ad-Aware missed on my work laptop.

www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/?ref=google_sd

Edited to add that I didn't pay the 30 bucks--I just emptied the temporary internet files and cookies.  Found something in my registry and I searched/found/deleted it manually.  I'm no computer guru, so anyone chime in about this for me too

Kaspersky has a good online scanner. I don't trust Trend Micros, after a bad experience.

I have the good ones installed.  Should I run them in safe-mode sometimes?  Any tricks to that?
