As long as you don't mind filling out the BATF multiple firearm purchase form in addition to the standard 4473 then NO limit to the number you can purchase from a dealer.

What's your credit card limit?

The most I have ever bought is 2 at once but I have seen people by 5 at one time.  Don't think that there is a limit but I am sure that after a few someone will ask about why you are getting so many, I guess to make sure that you aren't re-selling them.

Edited for spelling

Fact: if you buy more than one handgun at a time, a special form is sent to the ATF.

Edit: Damnit, beaten.

Some states do have dumbass 1 pistol a month or similar laws.  There is no federal law.

Check local laws.

Nope, buy all you want

You are a collector

Neighbor next door collects cats and no one has said anything to her. Guns, cats, all the same

Is there a limit to the number of firewarms I can buy

Why is the ATF keeping track of how many Firewarms you buy?

If you buy more than 1 handgun in a 5 day period, a Multiple Handgun Sale form must be filled out (by the FFL) and submitted to the ATF.

There are no other rules or regulations regarding a certain number of firearms.

A copy is also sent to local law enforcement.

without raising official sucspicion or being denied?

I have a CCW so I fill out the ATF paperwork but they dont call it in for an approval with me standing there.

I may have heard theres a certain number of guns one can buy within a timeframe before the ATF cracks down and starts giving waits/

I want to seriously start stocking up before the election in case of a new ban on AW 50 cals or high cap mags etc

Thanks in advance

Do you have a wife?

Thank you all for your answers even the sarcastic ones.

As to why the ATF wants to know how many guns I buy I have no idea you would have to ask them why they care and why they send multiple purchase forms to local LE?? Sounds dumb to me

From looking around at other boards it seems 5 firearms or more at the same time may get you a visit or call from the ATF may being the key

Thanks again

The ATF does not know how many firearms you buy.

When I call in a background check, they ask if it is for a handgun or a long gun, or both. If you are buying 200 stripped AR-15 lower receivers, which still qualify as firearms, I just say "long gun". They have no way of knowing how many long guns, unless they start a trace on one of those lowers. THEN and only then would they see a 4473 which would have the 200 serial numbers listed on it (and the continuation sheet). 4473s are kept by the FFLs, not turned into the ATF, unless there is a reason (firearm used in a crime).

Also, the record of the electronic background check (NICS call in) is erased in 24 hours.

To clarify, isn't that more than 1 handgun from the same dealer in a 5 day period?

Yes, I should have said that.

Though I do believe that the "long gun/handgun" question on the 4473 relates to this as well.

Honestly, I don't think you could buy that many. Your dealer would most likely get tired of the paperwork/NICS calling before the BATFE gets suspicious.

I would recommend keeping it under 20, just for safe practice. Or we can just say the limit is 3 and any more over that has to be given to fellow ARFCOMers.

IT is NOT, that they want to keep track of the number of firearms one purchases.

They want to keep up with multiple purchases because it's not uncommon for ner-do-wells to travel to Florida or other states where firearms purchases are easier, buy a truckload of firearms and then scoot back to the hood and sell them outta the back of the car or PU. When these weapons begin to show up "used in crimes" they can then backtrack them faster using these mutiple firearms purchase forms.

Granted I would not trust the BATF further than I could toss one of 'em, but IMO this does not hurt us, but does help them catch bad folks doing bad things that reflect badly on all gunowners as a whole easier.

eta - BTW, cptango, it's bad form to edit out your original post as others sometimes can learn from the original question asked, deleting/editing it, prevents folks from even understanding what the topic was about......, something to consider.

Has ATF come into your shop and scanned your bound book and 4473's?
