Man, this thing gets hot. If I used a comp on my lap a lot, I'd prob. be infertile.
Link Posted: 4/17/2006 12:51:12 PM EST
mine is fine. do you use a gaming laptop or something?
Link Posted: 4/17/2006 12:51:48 PM EST
I do remember reading a while back about how the prolonged exposure to the heat of a laptop can kill your swimmers...

my gets hot too, but my is a compact sony..everything packed into one

HP 5227 laptop

The fan is blowing out very hot air, always does. And all I've been doing all day is running semi-graphic intensive SCADA programs.

That's why they're not called LAPTOPS anymore, they're called notebooks. They've been pushing temperature for a while.

They're not made to be put on your lap.

this is going to sound bad...

spread your legs, let the air flow under the laptop, just not off the sides.

If you're plugged into the landline power / battery charger it'll heat up quite a bit too.

(Gotta squeeeze those 'lectrons, baby! )

I used a closed-foam angled pillow to help with the heat...using it right now, too.

Nothing a handy sheet of lead won't protect you from. Every life is sacred, even the swimmers.

it will slow cook your nads bro.

Pillows and/or your legs can block the fan vents. They make special trays with cooling channels out to the sides for this.

Go to any computer supply site and search for "cooling tray". Some even have fans that plug into a USB port.

I can throttle mine down so it stayswarm not hot.

I can also get it to cook an egg.

This is such a depressing thread to read as i am sitting with my notebook in lap...i feel sterility comming on already

I have an Acer C314 Tablet, and it gets smoking hot, especially when plugged in. I have a cooling pad for it, it works ok. Propping it up where the CPU fan is works better.

Don't keep it on your lap, for your children.

I probably oughta get a laptop for that reason alone. The world is just not ready for the product of my demon seed.

I've been researching new laptops recently, and it seems that some models consistently get complaints about running too hot, while others (using essentially the same hardware in a similar-sized package) get complements about running cool. So, what makes the difference?

Better processor power management software?
More efficient fan?
Better heat sink design and location?
Are some manufacturers installing insulation around the heat sink (to keep the case cool)?

I hired an illegal to hold mine.

My son in college has a Toshiba Sat A75 with Pent 4 at 3.2 ghz. Plus it has a hot video card. It gets very hot when doing games and has had some shutdowns. Putting it on a cooling tray (with fans) and blowing it out every so often with canned air has solved that but it still gets quite hot.

I have a Toshiba Sat M35X with Celeron M at 1.4 ghz. I don' do games, just business applications and surfing the net. Barely gets warm.

Unless a diehard gamer, get a Pentium M or Celeron M. BTW, you can't directly compare the processor speed to the regular Celeroon and Pentium. The M's compare roughly 2x, so a 1.4 ghz Celeron M is appx equal to a 2.8 ghz Celeron. The M chip sets are engineered for less current draw, which means longer battery life, and less energy wasted as heat.

My Macbook Pro never gets real hot when using it on my lap. I am sitting on my couch, posting this right now, while watching fight club. The machine itself has been running for 2 hours or so, not hot at all.

Get a laptop with one of the newer Pentium-M or Duo-Core processors. They run pretty cool. My Inspiron 6000 w/ 2.13GHz Pentium-M doesn't get very warm at all & gets excellent battery life.

Believe it or not they actually call it "hot leg". At least thats what they call it in the ad's for the little gizmos you sit your laptop in to keep it from happening. I just move mine every so often.

Eh , it keeps my nuts nice and toasty.

I thought you learned your lesson about assuming that your "gun" isn't loaded?
