Most military units require the use of a lanyard.  I know a Corpsmen who had to buy a M9 because while he was on the boat company of MEU.  The riggid raider he was on capsized and his pistol went to the bottom.

Brad at www.lightfighter.com can get you a nice one that is coiled like a telephone handset cord, so it doesn't hang down and snag on everything in the AO. It also has a fastex quick-disconnect buckle. I forget the brand, but it is the heat.

My use for a lanyard is when I camp I put my pistol at my feet in my sleeping bag and have it tied to my wrist so I can pull it up if I need it and it is way out of sight.
