Looking at the daily record of incoming/outgoing bandwidth history on the router.. for days when no one was here (ie, out of town), but of course the "modem" and router were on, 150 Mb per day of unsolicited traffic was sent to my assigned IP address.  Wowz.

Yeah, that's me.  Your data needs seem to be pretty bursty, and, well –– frankly, I need the bandwidth for my bot-herders and their lobotomized minions.  Hope you don't mind; I owe you a beer.

Guessing this is unsolicited mail?  Not unusual, just unusual that you noticed.Belay that; you're not a typical user.

Does your router have a logging feature that shows how many users or IP addresses are leased out?  Could it be someone else mooching a connection from next door or from the street?

NimmerMehr already said it was from incoming only. Doesn't surprise me at all.

Yup anyone can send traffic to a routed IP . Could be anything from a misconfiguration somewhere to a deliberate DDoS attack

what it is is mostly dhcp requests from 10.x.x.x

boring traffic, as the firewall drops the packets, but still 150MB a day of a bunch of ... dweebs.. sending 20kbps of dhcp requests from a spoofed unroutable source.

wait, it's showing 10.x.x.x as the source?
the 10 network is not routable over the internet and is used as a class A internal network (like how most home routers use 192.168.x.x but intended for company sized networks)

I know what 10.x is.. and the internet is classless you racists bastard.
