I heard a commercial excitedly announcing that bon jovi was coming to town for a concert. Then I turned the radio to another station and heard a bon jovi song. Which made me wonder: Out of all the 80's band, how in the hell did bon jovi survive, and why are they at a high level of popularity (i.e. they fill big venues)???

They sucked in the 80's, they still suck now. But for some reason they're still selling albums and still touring to large audiences. Unfortunately, I think there's no end in sight, and they're going to end up becoming a band like the stones- still playing in their 60's to big crowds, and treated like some sort of legends. All for sucking throughout their entire career.

How does this happen? How does a crappy hair metal / chick band stick around for 20 years making crappy music and stay popular?

I thought "Wanted Dead or Alive" was a good song. After all it was the theme song for "Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man"

I was watching a special about them on VH1 a couple years ago. Some Rolling Stone reporter said he believed that the secret of their success was that their music reached a few generations. During the Heavy Metal/Hair Band Days, they didn't write songs about sex or vague references to drugs, or politics. The guy basically said that Bon Jovi, then, was the closest thing to a real rock band that the music industry had seen in a long time. I'm not sure I agree or not but if you look at most other bands that were big in the mid 80's with them, they are all gone now. Bon Jovi is still selling out big arenas.

"So Jon, I hear you play a vampire in your new movie. Finally! A role which REQUIRES you to suck!"

They suck and so does Kerry.

There are lots of 80s bands still around and touring. Hell, Motley Crew is still around and touring. It’s amazing how people will just eat this shit up.

Probably their good proper left leaning stance on political issues, and their tendency to spew their political opinions at any microphone within range...
