My phone's GPS accuracy leaves something to be desired.  I even tried mock locations and a gps puck with a few "bluetooth gps providers" apps (these apps dont seem to work for shit btw.  Ive tried them all on multiple android phones.  back in the day I used this puck on blackberry via serial bluetooth port)

are these dedicated handheld units accurate to at least 2 or 3 meters?

My dog tracking unit from Garmin is accurate to a couple feet or less depending on how many satellites you are connected to.

I have used it to Geocache extremely effectively.

GPS kit on  I phone it's 10.00 I think. It is ridiculously good. I use it on fires to track, and just better situational awareness of area.

edit: sorry you got a droid.
