I'm on a road trip, my Garmin Etrex Vista HCx got me 6 hours down the road to my destination.

it auto powered off normally, and when I got back in and tried to power it up, nothing

changed the batteries and even tried putting it into diagnostic mode to no avail... no signs of life

my googlefoo is weak as I couldn't find anything relevant.

anyone know of any possible 'fixes' that can be done by someone on the road?

oh yeah, I'm using the Garmin 12v adapter, which I'm susspecting as the culprit (causing damage)

I had an etrex legend C whos usb interface got fried somehow using this same adapter...but, I have

used this same adapter with this unit for quite some time...

only other thing I can suggest

take batteries out for a while and let it sit, then retry
take microsd card out as well when trying
try another brand of batteries

other than that.. not sounding good.

I had the same problem with that unit. Called Garmin and they sent me a new one. (out of warranty)

Tell the R2 unit in the trunk to wake up!

check the battery contacts on the device.  make sure they are not broken, If they are dirty clean with a pencil eraser.

I've had a similar problem.  Try rapping the side of the unit with your hand.  Not super hard, but firm.  Some units sold a few years ago had a loose connection to a cable on the inside, and I periodically have to do this.

It sounds like you've exhausted all your noninvasive troubleshooting options.

Next try calling Garmin.

If they offer no solution, it's time to open the unit. You might get lucky and find a loose contact.

Did the unit get dropped, or left in the sun or a hot car?

called garmin this morning... no joy on the trouble shooting.. basically my only "option" with them is to send it in for repair at the cost of ~$80

not a happy garmin user.. this is the 2nd Garmin I've had 'brick' on me in the last 2 years.... I still have some Magellan's from the 90's that are still working just fine...go figure (I do like the features and interface better on Garmin, they are newer, but still...)

what timing.. and I need something for a trip coming up soon...

I bit the big one, spent the $$ and got a "newly overhauled" unit in the mail today.

fucking thing doesn't recognize the microSD card  (unit and mapsource) and of course, it's after hours and no joy on their "not so helpful" website..

GD, I HATE wasting my fucking time on shit like this.

eta: just got a auto reply from their customer service email... my email request for help will be handled w/in 3 working days (not including sat/sun) and guess what, they'll get it tomorrow and I won't hear shit  till the middle of next week if I'm lucky.

I love garmin stuff....when it fucking works,  but good luck when it doesn't. fuckingassholes

The maps are licensed per GPS, not per person.  Unless you bought a retail SD card from Garmin with maps pre-loaded, your SD card will only work in your old GPS.

You will need to either buy a new City Navigator license to get a new key, or hope that a friendly service agent will help you do this for free.  They have in the past for some folks.  I wouldn't use email, I'd call them on the phone tomorrow.  Maybe keep calling until you find a sympathetic agent...

well thats awfull fucking nice for them to let me know (if in fact that is the case)  Mapsource is basicly telling me the card, if it is there, is most likely inserted wrong (it only goes in one fucking way)

thanks for your help, any hate percieved in this thread is not directed in your way at all

I've had mixed results with garmin as well, but the competition isn't any bettter, it seems to be worse.

It seems like there is always some little bug. I had one that would lock up if it was on gps off and you turned it on from the menu. You had to take the batteries out to make it work. The solution for me is just to turn it off, then on again if I need to do that.

I've had screens that went blank. Backlight levels that don't go past 50%. And a host of other bugs. If I remember correctly I've sent 3 of them back.

My last too, the venture hc and vista hcx have been pretty good aside from the usual bugs. I have heard that garmin doesn't like certain cards. I get my maps free from gpsdepot.com so I havn't had any map problems. There is a way to make your own maps, that's pretty much the purpose of gpsdepot.com, but I hadn't tried that yet.
