I called Colt and it would cost 225 clams to get an AR-15 refinished with a 30 -45 day turnaround. Not to mention my rifle would have to be returned to an FFL for me to get it back. Is it possible to get good quality results refinishing a firearm at home with some form of a refinishing kit. Any hints towards a kit if it is possible ?

Lots of folks have had good luck with Brownells products. Colt is full of shit if they told you they would have to ship your gun back to an FFL- you can legally ship your guns directly to an FFL holder or manufacturer for repairs, etc. and they can ship it directly back to you. Lots of folks can refinish that gun for less than Colt- see the "Robar vs Black T" thread that's active right now for some ideas. Colt would be the LAST place I'd send that rifle for refinishing!
