I've noticed that the new bottles say not for kids under 6, but the pediatrician gave out a dosing chart with diphenhydramine on it at our last well visit.

ETA munchkin is 2 years old.

Youngest son had severe allergies and both his pediatrician and the allergist recommended Benadryl from the time he turned 1 (that's when we discovered them, I don't know if they'd suggest Benadryl under 12 months or not)
He's tried most of the prescription types as well, Zyrtec especially, but Benadryl was always there for extreme cases or sleepless nights

Instructions on the bottle are to protect the company not the consumer, IMHO. Your doctor can treat his patients as individuals while the Benadryl people have to tailor their directions to include the entire population, including people who use the stuff only to get the kid drowsy. It may be that more than anything that caused them to change it to 6+

Due to severe allergies, my twins have been using Benedryl since they were 9 months old.  It was recommended by two pediatricians and their allergist.  Dosages were (and still are) very conservative, of course.  Even though they are almost 5 years old now, we keep them on a 75% dosage for their age/weight.

However, I'd never give it to any child of any age without a doctor's order.  Too many horror stories out there...

Yes, gave it to my son a couple of times (under doctor's orders) when he was having weird skin rashes that appeared to be reactions to something.  Actually made him a little hyperactive, not drowsy at all.

ETA First time, my son was a little over three years old.

My baby isn't born yet.

But I keep them on hand for my dog, if that helps.

That stuff is amazing, I keep it in all my bags, the truck and the house because you never know when someone is going to be allergic to some random thing.
