i work in the beer industry and last week i was told that 95% of the asian beer out there has formaldehyde in it, a known cancer causing agent. i ran a search when i got home and there seems to be some truth behind this. the chinese state that they use it as a preservative...... and i really started to like tsingtao too.......

Orion beer is awesome.

Qing Dao (Tsing Tao) was started by the Germans, so I would imagine it would be ok. But I guess the Chinese could've changed it a little after they regained control of Qing Dao.

I drank all kinds of Chinese hard alcohol and beer when I was there. I'll let you know if I get cancer.

Forein Heinekin has formaldahyde in it. Tastes good too, not at all like the American version that tastes of soapy water.
Link Posted: 1/26/2006 4:38:42 PM EDT
I drank the hell out of OB and Korean Budweiser when I was there.

I also drank Soju, which has formaldehyde in it.

I was hoping to save some money on my funeral.

Cheers,

Soju can hurt a man all by itself. do the bottles still look like evian water?
Link Posted: 1/26/2006 5:28:26 PM EDT
Eh, almost everything we eat and drink has something that can kill you. No sense in stressing about it, just as long are you aren't taking shots of rat poison.
Link Posted: 1/26/2006 5:34:01 PM EDT
If you drink too much water, it can kill you.

Beer is mostly water.

Therefore, if you drink too much beer, it can kill you.

Link Posted: 1/26/2006 5:40:14 PM EDT
I heard rolling rock has it in it too.
Link Posted: 1/26/2006 5:44:07 PM EDT
I only drink beer that was brewed in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot of 1516.
Link Posted: 1/26/2006 6:21:36 PM EDT
Anything can kill you. Might as well be the beer.
Link Posted: 1/26/2006 6:25:25 PM EDT
I almost killed myself on OB and Soju a few times...
Link Posted: 1/26/2006 6:28:44 PM EDT
I'll bet plain beer kills alot more people every than Asian beer with traces of formaldehyde in it.

Our San Miguel Beer is very good ...

As stated China's Tsing Tao beer is also good ... if you like the light tasting kind ... tastes kinda' sweet too.

Thailand's Sing Ha is also very good ... for the light lovers.

I can tell you this: on Christmas of 2004 I received as a gift a variety of bizarre beers from all over the world. among them was Tsing Tao, and I was incredibly sick after drinking it.

Of course it may have had something to do witht he fact I drank my entire gift earlier that day...

Last I had Soju in Korea was 13 years ago. It was in those evian kind of bottles.

Second worst hangover ever. First worst, Homecoming party when I was pledging a fraternity. I was hungover from that one for a week. I got over the Soju in a day or so.

Oriental Brewery, great stuff. beats the heck out of the rinsed out soda bottled crap MaMa-San would bring out to you in the field

That is after you get over the taste of the first bottle then the rest of your tour is great with it in the large combat bottle size of course

Yeah, Soju is really bad for you...the Jinro brand seems to have the best taste inmho. Goes well with some Kalbi/bulgogi bbq tho.

They say that kimchi and those huge peices of garlic are what saves them from the cancer, lol

I must have heard about 40 cases of stomach cancer in the 3 years I lived in Seoul. All Korean men, all heavy drinkers of soju.
Link Posted: 1/27/2006 4:36:18 AM EDT
Well hey, anything with Nutrasweet can poison you too, as it breaks down in your body into Formaldehyde, wood alcohol, and some other noxious substances. Yet people swill it down wholesale...I guess even if they knew, the low risk seems worth it to them.

Link Posted: 1/27/2006 4:41:06 AM EDT
aside from soju, the only other Korean stuff I had when I was there was Cass, and the shit was like water. I must have drank 3 pitchers of it and still didnt get drunk...

You are close, but the wrong side of Manila bay. That picture was taken on Corregidor, about 75M from MacArthur's. I just got back two days ago from a trip to the Philippines. I really want to go back!!!

Where in the PI do you live?

All sorts of things, but its best-known use is arguably embalming fluid for corpses.

Don't tell me that my favorite drink will kill me....

3.6 Liters for less than 10 bucks

Jinro..the most popular brand in the bars and restraunts here...

From the company website:

"...You can enjoy pure taste without the burden of hangovers due to it's containing asparagine and affulent minerals. ..."

I think you can get this stuff back in the States...though I bet most Americans have never heard of it...

www.jinro.co.kr/english/product/01.asp

Soju, OB, Cass, and Hite for me

I'm sure that when I bought it in Korea, Jinro was boasting that it was hangover free because it was filtered 3 times with bamboo charcoal

Either way my favourite

I've drank San Miguel beer and I'm still alive.
Link Posted: 1/28/2006 9:48:25 AM EDT
I've been drinking nothing but Gordon Bieresch since December. Anyone else like it? Im stuck on the Marzaan auburn lager. Its exactly how I want my beer to taste. When me and my cousin go pier fishing, we stop by those asian super markets to pick up bait, and some tsing tao or OB. Decent stuff.

I have drank much orion and tiger beer in my day. Still kicking.

Avid drinker of Sapporo and Kirin for quite some time now. The class 6 here on Ft Lewis just started selling soju here on post and have been drinking that a lot lately, good stuff.

Ba Mi Ba "33" Tiger Beer, antone know what I'm talkin about?
Link Posted: 2/6/2006 12:56:50 PM EDT
I think all beer has formaldehyde in it, as well as wood alcohol etc. Thing is it's in small amount it wont kill you. When you're dealing with distilled spirits, you're concentrating the alcohol, the bad as well as the good but the bad is presumably thrown out int he process.
