Find the exact model of the TV and the remote. See if the manufacturer of the remote has a website with product info (mine did) and check the site to see if its compatible or email the manufacturer. Most universal remotes have some sort of list of what they're compatible with so you can program it with a code for the model of TV or VCR it needs to work with.

Depends on how old the set is and what technology was used for the remote control. Some of the very old TV's used ultrasonic instead of infra-red to accomplish the remote, if this is the case then a universal probably won't work. If the set is IR remote then there is a very good chance that a universal controller will be able to "learn" the IR commands.

Only for Zeniths w/ infrared remote. Those with ultrasonic remotes (I can't believe that any of those TV's still work) are S.O.L.!

Oh, and don't forget - it has to have had a remote build into it already - you aren't going to buy one of those universal remotes and get your old TV (whose remote was you telling your 7 year old "go change the channel") to now work remotely.

Is anyone aware of a universal remote that will work with TV/VCR combo units? All the ones I have seen specifically state that they will not work with such devices.

Get one of these http://www.yamahashoponline.com/product.asp?sku=2325353, it works with anything IR. Touch screen fully programmable. Even has macros so you can turn on several devices with one click. I love mine. Only downside of it is it eats batteries, Nickel Metal Hydride rechareables highly recommended.

Aw, man, those ultrasonics are the best kind! No batteries to replace Ð And if you tinkle your car keys just right, the TV will change channels on its own...
