I have a certain number of all the specialty rounds such as tracer, AP, API, I, Starburst and some custom stuff for long range picking for all of my calibers including the AR. But what type of ammo is an all around favorite for the AR that a man would want to keep a few thousand rounds of for all purpose combat. I was thinking of purchasing a bunch of pulled ss109 and reloading them. What do you think?

If you trust your life to your own reloads then go for it.

I basically think that as in defensive handguns it is best to carry commercial manufactured ammo.  The manufacturing process is exacting.  Any good firearms instructor will stress this.

If you opt for commercial ammo - try a bunch of whatever brand you think you would like to stock up on and if your AR eats it without a hiccup then buy several thousand rounds and stow them for that rainy day.

Just be sure you store them properly and they will be ready to go years from now if and when you need them.  It isn't a bad idea to buy a few hundred rounds from time time and then shoot that amount of the stored ammo to refresh your stock over a period of time.

There are lots of good brands inexpensive ammo out there but you need to find what yours likes really well and then go with it.

The M855/SS109 is suppose to have better accuracy due to its "wind bucking ability" as it is heavier ans supposedly better penetration as well.
Mind you, I *didn't* say it was "armor piercing".

The M193 (55gr FMJ) is less expensive and more readily available, unless you expect to be shooting at ranges beyond 200-250 meters, this may be more reasonable. Also, due to the cost, you could accumulate more of it.

I would think it depends upon what circumstances you expect to use it.

If its in an urban enviroment, the M193 may be just as effective as the ranges will be shorter.

Just my opinion...

If you don't have a budget to worry about then get:

IMI M193 or M855
Fed./Amer. Ea. - 55gr. FMJBT
S. African 55gr. 300ct. battle packs
Spanish SS109

Win. Q3131A is a good choice but have heard one or two negative stories w/ it that has me puzzled.

If talking about reloading only, then I'd choose to do a equal amount of both 55gr. FMJ & 62gr. SC.

I concur with the excellant advice given so far. If you are ever in a situation that to you is a shtf, and then you have to defend yourself, after it is over, you can find more friends with manufactured ammunition then hand loaded. Besides when the total cost is factored out, it is just as cheap to buy what you need now while it is still available.

Buy the pulled ss109 & go for it. Your ammo will be superior to factory once you find the load for your rifle. That said, you may not be able to get it as waterproof/indestructible as you can buy it. Your call.

62 gr. is slightly better at long range, and it does penetrate better.  55 gr. is cheaper, lighter, (improtant if you have to hump it) and supposedly has better wounding capability as it tends to yaw and break up in the target.  S & B 55 gr. is m193 spec, low flash, waterproof, and cheaper to buy than to reload.  62 gr. penetrator has a more limited application than you may think.

Something that I have been doing is that every gun show that I go to and see any IMI there, I try to buy a box or two. Now I have 2 ammo cans full of M855 and M193. I also decided to pick up  600 rds. of Lapua and I'm sitting on that too.
But I would have no problem using any of my reloads in an emergency situation either. i think I do a pretty good job with them and I know that all the dead woodchucks don't compalin too much about them either.
I have way too much brass and a small stach of 62 gr. FMJ that I keep back for emergency purposes.
It amazes me how much stuff I acquire by bits and pieces here and there. I usually try to wait till the shows are wrapping up and go and make them reasonable offers for it. Problem now is trying to store all of it and keep it sorted out.

I have HEARD that this ammo has had problems.  If anyone is going to store a lot of this stuff for emergency use, I would suggest that you take a take a box or two to the range and blast away to double-check to make sure that it does work as advertised.  It would be terrible to find out that you have a defective lot during an emergency.

I believe that's an old story about Q3131 and not Q3131A.  Prolly true from what I've heard - The case rims were pulling off because the round would not extract.  But no problems with Q3131A.

If you are going to buy a lot of ammo for whatever, I would still shoot a box or two just to double check, because you never know.

Didn't mean to step or your toes warlord.  I was pretty much responding to the 3131 talk from everyone.  [8D]

And you are correct in either case, feed your AR what it likes.

I don't know what the "best" 223 is for SHTF, but I feel confident with my reloads that consist of: IMI SS109 bullets, cheap surplus WC844 powder, whatever primers the store has, and my own brass.  When I run out of brass (I reload a LOT more than I shoot), I order fully processed brass from www.rvow.com

Never had a squib or blown-up rifle, and reloading M855/SS109 costs about the same as buying new M193.

My website has the load info that I use for both 223 and 308, including AP.

Sorry I didn't mean to offend anyone, I just was trying to say that no matter what ammo you buy, just try out a few rounds just to be sure that it goes bang! rather than poof! or click! before you sock it away.  It would be terrible to find out it goes poof or click, like during the L.A. riots when you need it the most.
