Woman's Written Plea Leads to Arrest

DUBLIN, Ga. — A captive woman's desperate plea for help found scrawled on the wall of a rest stop has led to a trucker's arrest.

The 24-year-old woman, Katina L. Shaddix, used an ink marker to scrawl, "Won't let me out. Beating me, this is no joke!" and "Cannon truck 383" on the wall of a restroom at a rest stop on Interstate 75 in Tennessee. A maintenance worker found the message Friday evening and called 911.

Shaddix said she had been beaten and held against her will. She had left over 100 messages in restrooms across the country.

Authorities were able to use a global positioning system to trace the truck to another rest stop on Interstate 16 in Georgia. Deputies swarmed the truck early Saturday and arrested the driver.

Shannon E. Jones, 26, of Delhi, N.Y., was being held without bond on a charge of aggravated assault.

Shaddix, of Alabama, was treated at a hospital Monday and taken to a homeless shelter because she told police she had no family.

McMinn sheriff's Cpl. Greg Walker said a missing-persons report indicated Shaddix had been missing for at least three months. He said Shaddix told Georgia deputies she had been trying to get away from Jones for a year. It was unclear how long Shaddix had been kept on the truck.

Bob Curtis, Cannon's director of operations, said Jones had worked for the company since January and was hauling light bulbs to a Wal-Mart in Douglas, Ga.
